For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Winter Juniors qualifier Tyler Ortiz has announced his commitment to swim for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas beginning in the fall of 2026. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:

I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue both my academic and athletic career at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I would like to thank my family and friends for their constant support, as well as Coach Alex and everyone at LAC for helping me grow into the athlete I am today. I’d also like to thank Coach Dan, Coach Pat, and the entire UNLV coaching staff for giving me this incredible opportunity. “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” – Proverbs 16:9. GO REBELS!

A native of Livermore, Calif., Ortiz is currently in the midst of his senior year at Granada High School, where he has been a member of the varsity swimming and diving team all four years. He also trains year-round with the Livermore Aqua Cowboys and specializes in sprint freestyle and butterfly.

Ortiz most recently competed at Winter Juniors West in December, his first time at the meet, where he turned in a series of lifetime best performances. He placed 17th in the 200 fly (1:46.90), 53rd in the 100 fly (49.04), and 70th in the 50 free (20.81), all lifetime bests, while his 96th-place finish in the 100 free (46.02) was a season best.

On the high school scene, Ortiz qualified for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Championships for the first time last May, touching 25th in the 100 fly (49.71) individually, while also helping Granada’s 200 medley relay (22.26 fly split) take 22nd and its 400 free relay (45.97 leadoff) finish 24th. He registered his current 100 free best of 45.58 leading off a relay at a sectional meet a few weeks prior.

Over the past year, Ortiz has made his biggest strides in the butterfly events, dropping nearly three seconds in the 200 fly and a quarter-second in the 100 fly, while also trimming nearly four tenths off his 50 free. He also owns a 1:40.70 in the 200 free from the East Bay Athletic League meet last April, though he hasn’t focused on the event as much since, as reflected in his 1:44.35 season best.

Based on the results, Ortiz’s best time in the 200 fly would have placed seventh, while his times in the 50, 100, and 200 free as well as the 100 fly would have landed in the ‘C’ finals. On the team, Ortiz is poised to rank second in the 200 fly, sixth in the 100 fly, eighth in the 100 free, ninth in the 50 free, and 10th in the 200 free next season, bringing added depth to a UNLV roster that won three sprint relays and finished top-three in all five at the 2026 championships. He will have no shortage of training partners, as the team regularly produces several conference scorers in his top events and returns a 1:44 200 flyer, three sub-48 100 flyers, six sub-45 100 freestylers (including three sub-44), nine swimmers at 20-mid or faster in the 50 free (including two sub-20), and five sub-1:40 200 freestylers.

Ortiz joins backstroker Edhy Vargas Ronquillo as the only publicized commits in the Rebels’ class of 2030.
