Six Rochester PAB staff members laid off following March court ruling

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Accountability Board says it has laid off six of its staff members as a result of a ruling that limits the PAB’s power to recommend discipline for Rochester Police officers.

In a statement from the PAB Friday, it said the decision was necessary “to preserve the agency’s long-termfinancial stability and organizational alignment.”

On March 20, an appellate court ruled the PAB doesn’t have the authority to recommend discipline against RPD officers. According to the decision, the local law giving the PAB that power is unlawful because it conflicts with state law and collective bargaining agreements.

This course of action was determined to be necessary to preserve the agency’s long-term financial stability and organizational alignment.

This decision was not made lightly. We are grateful to the staff members who dedicated theirtime and talents to advancing the mission of the PAB. Their contributions have helped shape theagency’s work and impact, and we thank them for their service and commitment to the Rochestercommunity.

Our commitment remains unchanged, and our mission does not end here. The PAB will continueeducating the community, serving as a voice for Rochester residents, and pushing for systemicchange within the Rochester Police Department.

While this is not a step we wanted to take, it does not erase the positive impact this agency hashad. Since opening our doors in 2022, the PAB has received more than 700 reports of allegedpolice misconduct, a clear indication that this agency is needed and valued by the community.

We will continue exploring every legal avenue available to restore the PAB to the agencyRochester residents voted for and deserve.”
