ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Here’s your guide to events happening on Friday and this weekend in the Rochester area. You can learn more about what’s happening around town on our Community Calendar.
Orchid show at RMSC (Friday through Sunday)
Hundreds of orchids will be on display and for sale at the Eisenhart Auditorium at RMSC. The 50th annual GROS Orchid Show kicks off on Friday. You can get tickets here, and children 12 and under are free.
The show runs from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Genesee Region Orchid Society has organized the show since 1969.
Genesee River cleanup event (Saturday)
With Earth Day approaching, the Genesee RiverWatch and other organizations are calling for volunteers on Saturday to clean up areas along the Genesee River.
The first event runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., near Lower Falls in Rochester. The second event runs from 10 a.m. to noon at Genesee Gateway Park, off of Mt. Hope Avenue. People can volunteer at either cleanup site.
Nets, poles, grabbers, and grappling hooks will be provided. You can sign up to volunteer and learn more about Earth Day cleanups on the Genesee RiverWatch website, here.
Rochester River Run 5K (Sunday)
A 5K race on Sunday aims to raise money for patients who are waiting for an organ transplant or recovering from one. The annual Rochester River Run 5K starts and finishes at Genesee Valley Park. You can sign up, start a fundraising team, or donate here.
Registration and packet pick-up will begin at 8:30 a.m. The race starts at 10:30 a.m. After the race, there will be a ceremony to honor organ donors and transplant recipients. The run is organized by the Friends of Strong Memorial Hospital and the hospital’s organ transplant teams.
Restaurant Week (through April 26)
Over 150 restaurants across the state are continuing to offer specials for Eat Local New York’s second annual Restaurant Week. Participating restaurants are offering prix-fixe menus or discounts, aiming to showcase local culinary experiences.
