Captain Connor? Expectations, All 82 for Toews, Playoffs Set, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Before we get into some other thoughts from folks around the interwebs following the Blackhawks’ exit interviews yesterday, I wanted to take a brief moment to thank everyone who’s spent time here, read and engaged in the conversation. It was a long year with a lot of good and plenty of not good for us to break down, over-react to and over-analyze for days. At the end of the day, we’re here because we love the Chicago Blackhawks. And for those who keep this place moving forward, I appreciate you.

The dream of the Blackhawks getting Florida’s first-round pick this year did not come to pass. The Panthers finished eighth in the draft lottery order. So we can all plan on the Blackhawks owning three first-round picks in the 2027 NHL Draft (until injuries destroy an Oilers season and that pick is somehow in the top 12, because of course, right?). Lots of talk yesterday about Connor Bedard. He’s up for a new contract this summer, and every expectation is that it gets done. There is no reason for concern whatsoever. Bedard reaffirmed his confidence in the direction of the franchise, the group of guys he’s playing with now, the pipeline that’s coming and the job Kyle Davidson is doing as the general manager. The only contract-related questions are how long and how much. But the other question that will likely be answered this summer regarding Bedard is if he’ll be wearing a C on his chest when he takes this ice in September. Bedard, some of his teammates and Davidson all spoke about the likelihood that he is the next captain of the Chicago Blackhawks. Ben Pope wrote about that subject.

Connor Bedard feels ready for the Blackhawks' captaincy, and his teammates agree."He’s the perfect guy for it. He cares about his teammates and checks in on everybody all the time. He’s our guy… I think he’s more than ready."New story: t.co/Exd3zgQVEu

    — Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) April 16, 2026 Kalen Lumpkins wrote about one of the other consistent themes from yesterday’s exit interviews: expectations of competing for a playoff spot next year. That’s what all of the players told us. It’s not just a goal — it’s an expectation. Good read here from Kalen.

The 2026-27 playoffs were a hot topic in today’s Blackhawks exit interviews. Can they end their playoff drought next season? Kyle Davison called it a realistic but “major step”. t.co/DYd148bCcS

    — Kalen Lumpkins (@kalenalumpkins) April 17, 2026 The 2025-26 NHL regular season is in the books. The playoffs are officially set. It’s go time for the 16 teams that still have something to play for.

    — NHL (@NHL) April 17, 2026 Jonathan Toews took the game’s opening faceoff for the Winnipeg Jets last night, marking his 82nd appearance. That’s is truly a remarkable accomplishment for the former Blackhawks captain (and the last player in franchise history to wear No. 19). After a series of physical issues seemingly stalled his career after 2020 and two years away from the game to get right, to make it to every game on the schedule is incredible. But we shouldn’t be surprised. At the end of the day, he’s still Jonathan Bryan Toews. Toews was the Masterton nominee for the Jets this year. One would think he’ll get a lot of consideration from the voting members of the PHWA for that award.

    — Winnipeg Jets (@NHLJets) April 16, 2026 The New Jersey Devils announced the hiring of Sunny Mehta as the team’s general manager. Mehta, 48, spent that last six seasons with the Florida Panthers, with the last three as assistant general manager and head of analytics. It’s a pretty cool story when you consider he grew up a Devils fan. He seemed pretty excited this morning on Twitter.

    — Sunny Mehta (@SunnyMehtaX) April 17, 2026 Finally, Macklin Celebrini broke Joe Thornton’s Sharks franchise record for the most points in a season last night. Thornton is an absolute beauty, and congratulated the teenager on the accomplishment.
