ROCHESTER, N.Y. — New York State and the nation continue to see the highest gas prices in years, amid the seventh week of the war with Iran, but those numbers have fallen slightly.

For the national average, it’s $4.07 per gallon on Friday, a drop of nearly 2 cents compared to Thursday. Compared to last week, it dropped by 7 cents.
For Rochester, the average has hardly changed, and it remains higher than both the state and national average. AAA recorded Rochester’s average at $4.17 per gallon on Friday, about the same as Thursday and a week ago. Rochester’s average remains around two cents higher than Buffalo’s average and three cents higher than Syracuse’s average.
The cheapest gas in the Rochester area on Friday is $3.49 per gallon at the SNK on North Clinton Avenue, according to GasBuddy. You can find the lowest price in your area through GasBuddy’s website.
Overall, Rochester has seen the sharpest spike in gas prices since March of 2022, during the pandemic era, which is impacting consumer behavior. News10NBC has spoken with people who are choosing to drive less and to stay home for vacations because of the high gas prices. It’s also been hard on drivers who use their own cars for work.
How to find the cheapest gas price
In addition to checking GasBuddy’s fuel finder, News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry has some tips to improve fuel efficiency or find the lowest price:
Keep your gas tank at least half full. This way, you have time to choose the cheapest gas station instead of what’s closest. Drive smoothly, as hard braking and acceleration can reduce fuel economy. Buy top-tier gas for better engine performance and fuel efficiency. Regularly check tire pressure, as low pressure can affect fuel efficiency. Use gas apps to find the cheapest gas nearby.RELATED:
