ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Penfield basketball star CJ Johnson helped lead the Patriots to their first state championship in program history in March, and he’s not done yet.
Johnson and most of his teammates were just juniors on that championship team. With nearly everyone set to return, unless they transfer to a prep school, Johnson said next year will be even more impressive.
“I don’t even want to think how scary it’ll be next year if everybody’s back. If it’s the same exact team, you basically got three Division I players on the same exact team,” Johnson said. “If you thought we were good this year, next year it’s going to be a whole different game.”
Section V fans have come to expect a show when the Patriots – and especially Johnson – take the court. From fastbreak slams to alley-oop throwdowns, he’s delivered some of the most electrifying dunks in the area.
“The between the legs (dunk against Hilton) might have been my favorite, because that’s rare to do in a game. That’s a difficult dunk to do in a game,” Johnson said.
But Johnson doesn’t want to be known as just a dunker. This offseason, he’s playing with City Rocks, a high-profile AAU team out of Albany, to sharpen his all-around game.
“It’s just a different level of competition especially compared to Section Five. 9 times out of 10 every player in the starting lineup that we’re playing is Division I,” Johnson said.
That elevated competition will prepare him for his senior season with Penfield basketball. Johnson said the rest of Section V should take notice.
“That’s only going to get me better at the end of the day. That’s going to prepare me. If I play this talent throughout the summer and I come back next year to Section V, the people that I’m playing aren’t going to be used to that,” Johnson said. “It’s a different level.”
