Believe it or not, things are about to get worse for Boyd in season 4 of From.
When we last saw him, Boyd (Harold Perrineau) was coming face-to-face with an old enemy he thought he’d defeated when Fatima’s ‘baby’ rapidly grew into the sinister Smiley.
“It really places him in this, in the space of ‘I can do everything I can, and I still might not be able to protect them,” Perrineau told Radio Times in an exclusive interview. “I could kill a motherf**ker, like I could kill a dude, and that still might not be enough to protect them.”
Back in season 2, Boyd thought he’d defeated Smiley for good after transferring some of the strange worm-like creatures in his blood to the monster. The moment marked one of the precious few victories for Boyd and the people of Fromville, making the events of the season 3 finale sting even more.
“It's a thing I feel with my kids all the time,” Perrineau added, “like I do all the things that I can and then something will happen and you're like, ‘damn it’. I thought I had this bubble and turns out I don't, and while it's really uncomfortable it's wildly human.”

The return of Smiley also answered one of the major mysteries in season 3.
Throughout the season we saw Boyd’s daughter-in-law Fatima struggling with strange and, in some cases, outright gross food cravings as her mysterious pregnancy continued.
Eventually, Fatima discovered that the only thing that would satiate her cravings was blood, suggesting whatever was growing inside her wasn’t a normal baby. And this was after being told by town doctor Kristy that she wasn’t even pregnant at all.
Fatima eventually gave birth to a strange pod, which was immediately taken from her by the Kimono Lady, who disappeared beneath the cabin with Boyd in pursuit.
In these strange tunnels Boyd can only watch on in horror as the pod grows into a reborn Smiley.
Asked how the return of Smiley impacts Boyd and the townsfolk, Perrineau added: “You'll see when it comes along, Boyd can do everything in his power but he just he doesn't have the power. And then everyone else will have to deal with it because that's all there is."
From season 4 will arrive in the US on 19 April. From seasons 1-3 are available to stream on NOW.
