Cases of an “extensively drug-resistant” infection known as shigella are rising in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which called the increase a “public health threat.”
In a new report released on April 9, the CDC detailed how cases of the virus went from 0% in 2011 through 2015 to 8.5% in 2023.
Previous outbreaks had involved “drug-susceptible strains” that primarily affected children, but new national data shows drug-resistant cases now impacting a different group.
The first isolates of the drug-resistant strains were identified in 2016. By 2023, 510 were identified within 10 months, the CDC reported.
“No Food and Drug Administration–approved oral antimicrobial agents are available to treat these,” the CDC stated.
So what exactly is the virus and what should you know?
What is shigella?
According to the Mayo Clinic, shigella, or shigellosis, is “an illness that affects the intestine” caused by a group of germs known as shigella bacteria.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms of shigella can include things like fever or stomach pain but the main symptom associated with an infection is “diarrhea that can be bloody or long lasting,” the Mayo Clinic reported.
Full list of symptoms:
Diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus, and that may last more than three days. Stomach pain or cramps. A feeling of needing to pass stool even when the bowel is empty. Fever. Upset stomach or vomiting.Symptoms often clear on their own within a week, but more severe cases may need treatment, Mayo reported.
Who is most at risk?
While shigella has been known to impact children under 5 the most, the latest round of drug-resistant infections has been found in adult men, according to the CDC.
The majority of cases studied by the CDC were in people over the age of 18, most of them men.
While some cases did report traveling, more than 80% had no international travel.
