The project will boost capacity from 68,000 seats to 85,000, adding a sky deck, corporate hospitality areas, boxes and lounges.
When completed, Eden Gardens will contain 41,000 sq ft of hospitality zones, 44,000 sq ft of non-match day facilities, six different seating categories and a 30% increase in corporate hospitality seats.
Fan zones will be created for Indian Premier League attendees, plus lounges and a member’s club will open the venue into the surrounding gardens.
The expansion has been designed carefully at the tight, inner-city site. It aims to respect the building’s surroundings and legacy.
Eden Gardens was originally built in 1864, first hosted a test match in 1934, and is the world’s third largest cricket stadium after Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and Melbourne Cricket Ground, both able to accommodate 100,000 fans.
Siddharth Soni, Populous’ principal architect, said: “The redevelopment project will create a truly 21st century venue at Eden Gardens, with safety, sustainability and the fan experience at the core to meet the requirements of modern-day sport, for it to continue its legacy and look to the future, particularly for the evolving formats of cricket, we are not just restoring Eden Gardens; we are enhancing an icon.”
Pranav Kashyap, Populous’ associate principal, said: “The design not only unlocks premium hospitality experiences, but also maximises the event day experience and opens up non-event day opportunities for the venue.
“This will provide an unparalleled experience for fans and players in India. Every strike of the bat will be heard loud and clear above the roar of the crowd.”
