Students and local residents plan to make money selling parking spaces at their houses and businesses this week as the University of Alabama plans to charge for parking on-campus.
On-campus parking spaces are being listed for $55 to $82.50 for the day of the concert, many people are having to resort to different spaces: ones being sold by students and the community.
Nicholas Hughes, a senior majoring in news media, lives in a house off-campus and said he has rented out parking spaces for events before.
“For all the football games, we sell parking in our driveway and on our front lawn,” he said. So, you know, why not do it for this and get some extra m
Crystal Ezell is a lifelong Tuscaloosa resident who said she would not be attending the concert. She put out a post in Facebook groups saying people could park in her driveway, which is a little more than seven miles from the stadium, free of charge.
Ezell also offered rides to campus for people who parked in her driveway and has already had a few people reach out to her and confirm.
“I’m not gonna charge somebody to park in my driveway seven miles away,” she said. “I just wanted to do something nice for somebody with the little bit of space I have.”
Non-campus parking for events is mostly sold day of, through driving up and purchasing from whoever is manning the parking lot, but there is also a newer option, a website.
Perch Parking is a website that allows students and locals to list parking spaces they are selling for any event. One of the founders, JJ Paulsen, senior majoring in economics at the University of Florida, said he has seen the need to expand to other college towns such as Tuscaloosa.
“I’m sure Tuscaloosa gets swamped on those football Saturdays and, I just kind of created a way for students, residents and businesses to have a much easier game day in terms of selling parking,” Paulsen said. “For fans coming into town, instead of having to experience that traffic and that stress, they can just pre-book a spot and know exactly where they’re going.”
The Wallen concert is the website’s first event in the Tuscaloosa market, but they have plans to expand to football parking in the fall, allowing fans to join the waitlist for season-long and single-game parking passes.
“If you’re going to Bryant-Denny Stadium for any event, it takes you 30 minutes to find a parking spot,” Paulsen said. “We’re ultimately just trying to eliminate that so people can really enjoy the town, enjoy the city and enjoy whatever is going on within the stadium that day.”
