Strike 3: The Rockies are having Good(man) days

Major League Baseball lore includes lots of father-son duos. The Boones, the Bonds and the Griffeys, for example – just to name a few. But it’s not just been on the field that family ties have blossomed. In the broadcast booth, those same family connections have brought joy to legions of baseball fans.

The title of “First Family” of baseball broadcasters is up for debate, but the three generations of Carays – starting with Hall-of-Famer Harry Caray and passed down to his son Skip and his grandson Chip (the latter two have been calling Atlanta Braves games for years) can lay that claim. So too can Jack and Joe Buck, famous for doing St. Louis Cardinals (and national) baseball broadcasts ,along with NFL football. Jack was another Hall-of-Famer and Joe is the current voice of Monday Night Football.

In Cincinnati, where the Reds have produced some of the best teams in MLB history, they also claim the best father-son broadcast combo from a decade ago when legendary broadcaster Marty Brennaman teamed up with his son Thom, who was born in the Cincinnati area during his father’s early days on the job.

More recently, Dan Shulman welcomed his son Ben into the radio booth, and they worked as a father and son broadcast duo during last year’s World Series, the first time that’s ever happened.

Now a father-son tandem from Colorado has joined the selected club. Longtime Colorado Rockies broadcaster Drew Goodman, who has been behind the microphone for Rockies TV games since 2002, recently helped welcome his son Zach to the Rockies broadcast team.

While Drew works on the local television side, Zach, now just 26 years old, joined the 850 KOA Rockies radio booth this season after being selected from a pool of three candidates – the other two being broadcasters from Rockies minor league affiliates. The younger Goodman had previously worked the past two seasons doing games in Amarillo, Texas for the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Double-A affiliate before earning his shot with his hometown team.

While the last name on his resume probably didn’t hurt, make no mistake: Zach earned this promotion on his own. A graduate of Webster University, Zach called college games before landing the Double-A gig with the D-Backs. After just two seasons as the lead broadcaster for the Sod Poodles (yes, that’s their real name) he landed what has to be a dream job.

It’s still early on in the job(s), and Drew is still a little sheepish about the situation. He’s equal parts proud father and tepid partner, dismissing the idea of the pair teaming up to call an inning or two on the TV side. Not yet, anyway. Drew doesn’t want to divert his son’s path in fashion, seeking to give him all the space he needs to carve his own Rockies broadcasting niche.

Not that dad won’t be buying a meal or three on road trips this season.

Hopefully at some point – the Rockies vs. A’s Father’s Day broadcast from Sacramento would be the perfect time – we can hear Drew and Zach Goodman on the air together. Hopefully they can call an inning when one or the other gets to call a home run from Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman (no relation).
