Billionaire Tom Steyer draws crowd in Santa Barbara as gubernatorial race heats up

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — As California’s governor’s race gains momentum, candidate Tom Steyer made a campaign stop in Santa Barbara Wednesday, speaking directly to voters at a packed town hall. The billionaire investor and climate activist, often described as a political outsider, is positioning himself as a candidate willing to challenge entrenched systems.

“We need somebody who's going to take on the status quo,” Steyer said. “That means someone who's going to look with a fresh eye and be willing to make structural change. That's me.”Steyer pointed to his past efforts taking on major industries as evidence of his leadership.

“I’m the person who's taken on the oil companies and beaten them, the tobacco companies and beaten them,” he said. “We need a change in California.”

The town hall, held at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, drew a large and energetic audience, with attendees filling the venue to capacity. Organizers say roughly 100 people had to be turned away due to limited space.

Throughout the event, Steyer fielded questions on key issues facing Californians — including the state’s ongoing affordability crisis.

“The biggest issue in housing is that we need to build a lot more houses, and we need to build them a lot faster and a lot cheaper,” Steyer said. “But in the short run, I'm going to push to greatly expand the renters tax credit.”

Steyer also leaned into his reputation as a wealthy businessman advocating for higher taxes on the ultra-rich, telling your NewsChannel, “I’m a billionaire who wants to tax billionaires.”

His campaign continues to focus heavily on economic inequality, climate action, and government accountability. During the town hall, he emphasized the importance of environmental justice in shaping policy.

“Every single environmental issue needs to start with environmental justice,” Steyer said. “We've had structural racism in where we put toxicity in this state forever, and it's critical that we directly, intentionally address it.”

The Santa Barbara stop is part of Steyer’s “Shared Prosperity” tour, as candidates increasingly visit the Central Coast to connect with voters ahead of the election.

KEYT will continue to follow developments in the governor’s race and local campaign stops.

News Channel Reporter Mina Wahab will have a sit down interview with Green Party gubernatorial candidate Butch Ware Thursday.
