No. 17 Alabama men’s golf finished its regular season with a fourth-place finish at the Mossy Oak Collegiate in West Point, Mississippi.
“There are a lot of things we can take away that were positive,” head coach Jay Seawell said. “We just keep shooting ourselves in the foot enough to keep us from doing the little things it takes to win a golf tournament. We are doing some big things, but not the little things, and that’s where we need to be better.”
Brycen Jones led the way for the Crimson Tide, finishing alone in third place with a 6-under-par tournament. In the first round, Jones shot an even-par round of 72, followed by a 1-under-par 71 before shooting an impressive 5-under-par round of 67 to conclude his tournament.
Nicholas Gross finished tied for 18th place with an even par tournament. He started slow in Round 1 with a 3-over-par 75, but responded in the second round with a 3-under-par round of 69 and finished with an even-par 72.
“There was a lot we can build off of,” Seawell said. “I was proud of Brycen [Jones] and he has been playing good consistent golf for us. [Nick] Gross is starting to round into form and looked the part this week.”
William Jennings had the highlight of the tournament for the Crimson Tide, making a hole-in-one in round 2 on hole No. 11, a 201-yard par 3, and finished tied for 23rd with a 1-over-par tournament. Jennings shot a 1-over-par 73 in the first round, followed that up with a 74 2-over-par and finished with a round of 70 2-under-par.
Connor Brown tied for 34th place with a 7-over-par. In the first round, he shot an even-par 72 thanks to an eagle on the 17th hole. In round 2, he shot a 4-over-par 76 and ended his tournament with a 75 3-over-par.
The captain, Jonathan Griz, finished tied for 53rd with a total score of 8-over-par. In Round 1, Griz put together a 3-over-par 75, then shot 2-under-par 70, but struggled in the final round, shooting a 79, 7-over-par.
Jack Mitchell had a tough tournament, finishing tied for 96th with a couple of rounds in the 80s. In Round 1, he put together a 73, 1-over-par, but it would all go downhill after that. In Round 2, he shot an 8-over-par 80, followed by a 10-over-par round of 82.
Now the Crimson Tide will await its NCAA Regional fate, which will be revealed on Wednesday, April 29, at 3 p.m. CT on Golf Channel.
“The regular season is over,” Seawell said. “That was it. It’s time to put it all together. It’s championship season and we have to be ready to perform the way I know we can perform.”
