Blackhawks Chairman Danny Wirtz Speaks About Confidence in Kyle Davidson

Between the first and second periods of Wednesday night’s Blackhawks season finale, team chairman Danny Wirtz spoke with reporters about the decision to sign general manager Kyle Davidson to a multi-year extension. Wirtz broke the news on the CHSN pregame show.

What went into the decision to extend Davidson?

“Just continuity,” Wirtz said. “I think, again, we’re really, really happy with the progress we’re making and with all the work we still need to get done, we want to continue to build the way we’re building and continue to execute on his plan and his vision.”

Wirtz said regarding the on-ice improvements he’s seen are how the Blackhawks are being competitive in more games this season than the previous couple years. This season (entering Wednesday), 35 Blackhawks games have been decided by one goal. During the previous seasons during the rebuild, that number was in the mid-20s. Wirtz did say the Blackhawks need to find a way to finish those games, but the fact that they’re close shows improvement.

Perhaps the biggest part of the improvement from Wirtz’ perspective has been the culture change in the room.

“I think the biggest thing for me really is the culture that’s getting built,” he said. “I think — and you guys are around our players now — you really see something a little bit different in the locker room. You see the way they are looking out for each other, the way they’re competing with each other. And really that’s kind of the biggest ingredient to winning hockey.”

The big question for most Blackhawks fans is: when will they go big game hunting on the market?

According to Wirtz, if/when the opportunity presents itself, Davidson has the green light to do whatever he needs to do to improve the Blackhawks.

“I don’t think our plan has always been exclusively to build from within,” he said. “I think the core of this team needs to be homegrown talent through the draft. That’s how we were successful in the past. And when the opportunity arises and when we have the opportunity to add to our team and to become better, there’s nothing holding Kyle back, that’s for sure. It’s not coming from me. So he’s got the reins to make those decisions when he thinks the time is right. And when the opportunities arise … we can’t always make the opportunities out of thin air.”
