Former Texas basketball coach Rodney Terry is expected to join Mark Byington’s staff at Vanderbilt, according to a report from On3’s Joe Tipton Wednesday morning.
With that, Terry is back coaching in the SEC after taking a season off and serving as an analyst for SEC Network. Terry coached Texas from 2023-2025 after working as an assistant (his second stint as a Texas assistant) under Shaka Smart and Chris Beard, and he brings 30 years of college coaching experience to Nashville.
Terry coached at UTEP, Fresno State and Texas, amassing a career record of 225-193. He’s also made stops at Baylor, UNC Wilmington and Texas from 2002-2011 under Rick Barnes.

Vanderbilt basketball has momentum for the first time in a long time. The Commodores recently advanced to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments for the first time since 2016-2017 and are now looking to advance to the second weekend for the first time since 2007.
But while the Commodores had a great season last year, there’s definitely some work to be done this offseason. Perhaps the most important measure for Byington and Co. is keeping Tyler Tanner, who has still yet to decide on his future with the NBA, transfer portal and a return to Nashville all in the cards.
The Commodores have not yet landed a transfer portal commitment, but have lost the likes of Frankie Collins, Mike James, Jaylon Dean-Vines and Tyler Harris to the portal so far.
