The NFL Draft is 8 days away.
And with that in mind, I feel as if we are going to come to a resolution (one way or another) regarding the Dexter Lawrence situation with the New York Giants.
In case you are unfamiliar, Lawrence has requested a trade from the Giants. The three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle is also looking for a new contract, which is likely at the core of this trade request. And while teams have inquired about a deal, there has been a belief in NFL reporting circles that the two sides would hash out a deal to keep Dexter Lawrence suiting up for the Giants as the John Harbaugh era kicks off in the Big Apple. However, there seems to have been a snag in talks:
The #Giants and star DL Dexter Lawrence, who have been talking about a new big-money extension, have reached an impasse, sources say. The Giants have engaged with teams on a potential trade and that will continue. It should come to a head before the Draft. pic.twitter.com/UhNXM4WGwF

I’m not sure if this is a leverage ploy or if it is a genuine bump in the road. Regardless of what it is, I hope the Chicago Bears are continuing to monitor the situaiton and are one of the teams that have “engaged” with the Giants on a potential trade. Not only does Dexter Lawrence play a position the Bears definitely need to fill, but he has also done so at a high level in recent years. Sure, I have concerns about the drop-off in production that came in 2025. But if there is an acceptable reasoning behind it, then I could be on board with Chicago’s football team making an aggressive push to acquire Lawrence in a trade.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler notes (via Twitter/X) that teams that are in search of upgrades along the interior of the defensive line could jump at the opportunity to trade for Lawrence because this isn’t a great draft class of defensive tackles. This anecdote aligns with what I have unearthed in my pre-draft research.
Looking back at our coverage before the 2025 NFL Draft, there were 12 interior defensive linemen among the 100 highest-ranked prospects on The Athletic’s consensus big board. One year later, Dane Brugler’s big board at the site has just seven defensive tackles ranked among the 100 best prospects. Given that bit of information, it might behoove the Bears to push the Giants if they truly feel that Lawrence can be a difference-maker.
(Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty Images)We explored the potential cost of a Dexter Lawrence trade last week. And if the cost of doing business is just the No. 25 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, I wouldn’t hesitate to agree to a deal. However, there is one notable hurdle that Chicago would need to clear before consummating.
Over The Cap’s estimations have the Bears with just $219,549 in available cap space going into the 2026 NFL Draft. The team has more wiggle room in 2027 ($61.354 million) and 2028 (a league-leading $287.987 million), but there are financial limitations that exist right now that give me pause. Of course, the Bears could execute some contract restructures and clear enough space to make a trade happen. But we can coss that bridge when we get to it.
When you consider Dexter Lawrence’s playe rprofile, potential, the Bears’ need to fill at the position he plays, and the rumored cost of doing business, this is a situation we will continue to monitor for obvious reasons. Stay tuned.
