Last Day, Studying Moore, Draft Talk, Björck Benched? Bowness Blows Up, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Happy Last Day of the Blackhawks Season to those who choose to celebrate! There’s one game left on the 2025-26 schedule, and it has Macklin Celebrini in Chicago to face Connor Bedard. I’m sure when the league was putting this one on the calendar they were hoping for there to be some/any significance beyond the two young stars trying to finish really good seasons on a high note. But both will see their front office add another prospect from the draft lottery again this year.

Nice read here from Ben Pope about how Oliver Moore has been spending his time off the ice during his injury. Two things here impress me. First: the level of self-awareness from Moore that things were, to an extent, “easier” for him at different levels before the NHL because of his all-world speed. Second: in his first professional season he recognizes the things he needs to work on and is addressing them already. This quote really stood out:

‘‘[In] juniors to college, I didn’t have to think the game as much,’’ Moore said. ‘‘Here, you have to really think the game. A lot of the steps I’m going to take this summer and going forward aren’t going to necessarily be physical or anything like that; I’ve put in the work there. It’s now learning the ins and outs of the game.

‘‘You look at guys like [Nikita] Kucherov, [Patrick] Kane, [Connor] McDavid [and Nathan] MacKinnon, they’re all obviously physically gifted, but they have that ability to think the game, as well. I don’t know if I’ll ever get there, but that’s what I want to improve on.’’

While injured, Oliver Moore shifted gears to studying the NHL. He talked to people and analyzed how hockey is played at this level. This summer, he plans to watch lots of film and continue learning how to "think the game."New Blackhawks story: t.co/oN0dkwh28h

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) April 14, 2026 Scott Wheeler at The Athletic ranked the top 20 drafted goalie prospects as this season comes to a close. He has Drew Commesso at No. 18 on his list. Adam Gajan, who received an honorable mention when Wheeler ranked the Blackhawks’ prospects, did not make this list. Yesterday I wrote about the Blackhawks’ draft assets being nice trade pieces this summer. Their second-round picks from the Maple Leafs and Islanders should give the Hawks four picks in the top 50 overall this summer. Scott Powers wrote about the Blackhawks owning another top-four pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. He writes that it would likely take something seismic for the Blackhawks to consider trading their top pick this year; they offered their 2025 first-round pick (which became Anton Frondell) to Columbus to move up to take Ivan Demidov in 2024 but the Blue Jackets didn’t accept. Here’s a quote from Wheeler that Powers included about the Blackhawks’ top options if they stick in the top two picks:

“As much as there are a handful of strong D who belong in the mix for a team picking in the top four this year, I think it’s incumbent on the Blackhawks, if they can, to find a running mate for Connor Bedard,” The Athletic’s draft and prospects expert, Scott Wheeler, said. “They passed on one already when they took Arty (Levshunov) over Ivan Demidov. And while Frondell, [Frank] Nazar and [Roman] Kantserov are all top-six pieces — and [Nick] Lardis might be — [Gavin] McKenna and [Ivar] Stenberg represent something different. They’re ceiling raisers for Bedard if they hit.”

Powers included the name, and I also think it’s worth including Caleb Malhotra as a real possibility if the Blackhawks see someone jump them in the draft lottery. The Blackhawks have seen plenty of him as a teammate of Marek Vanacker and Parker Holmes at Brantford in the OHL this season. Interesting buzz around a top draft prospect on Tuesday. Swedish media outlets were reporting that Viggo Björck, a potential top-ten pick this summer, is being banned from their team at the U18 World Championships because he wants to finish the U20 league finals with Djurgården. For context: Frondell finished his U20 season last year and showed up (albeit exhausted) at the U18 tournament in the middle of schedule. Frondell’s arrival received a hero’s welcome. It sounds like Björck will have to watch from home? Very strange. Rick Bowness was brought in to finish an underwhelming season as the head coach in Columbus and he didn’t get cheated on his way out the door for the summer. He was hot last night, and let the players, front office and fans know exactly how he felt about the group of guys in the room. It was far from a glowing endorsement of the Blue Jackets.

    — Joe Nugent (@joenuge) April 15, 2026 Finally, as a member of the PHWA I will once again have the privilege of voting for some of the NHL awards. It’s something i take very seriously because even just my single vote can influence the history of the game. For those who aren’t aware, I will have a vote for the Hart, Norris, Calder, Selke and Lady Byng trophies, the All-NHL teams and the All-Rookie team. Not everyone votes, so having a ballot is an honor.
