It ranks at #3 on IMDb's curated list of the Best Book-to-Film Adaptations, which happens to also feature another adaption of King's work at No. 1: 1994's The Shawshank Redemption, based on King's 1982 novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption."

The beloved Stand By Me film was directed by the late Rob Reiner, with screenplay adapted by Raynold Gideon and Bruce A. Even King himself has said that Stand By Me is his favorite cinematic take on his writing. In a 2014 Rolling Stone interview, the author praised the film for staying true to the book's emotional significance.

King has also voiced adoration for Reiner and what he did with the film. While paying tribute to the late director in an op-ed for the New York Times in December 2025, King recalled the first time Reiner showed him the film.

"He asked me for notes; I had none," King wrote. "I had just let the whole thing wash over me. I marveled at what a good story the truth could make in the right hands."
