Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 10, Phillies 4 – April 14, 2026

There’s no such thing as a “must-win” game in April, but this feels like the kind of win that can get the Cubs back on track. Not only was the pitching solid, but Craig Counsell’s offense is starting to click … which is a fantastic sign given the tough schedule ahead.

Counsell used Riley Martin as an opener tonight, hoping to take advantage of lefty-lefty matchups against Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper at the top of the Phillies’ lineup. The strategy worked to perfection, with Martin needing just six pitches to toss a 1-2-3 first. He has been lights out thus far in his Cubs career, quickly entering the ‘circle of trust’ in Tommy Hottovy’s bullpen.

Colin Rea came in after Martin to handle the bulk of tonight’s matchup, looking to build on the success he had last week in Tampa Bay. Unfortunately, he gave up a three-run home run to Edmundo Sosa just five batters into his outing, and it felt like things were going to unravel (especially after yesterday’s loss).

Instead, Rea was … brilliant. Across his six total innings, he worked four 1-2-3, striking out five and allowing zero walks. He continues to be extremely efficient and effective, proving his worth once again with a quality “start” against one of the best teams in baseball. His final line: 6.0 IP, 4H, 3ER, 0BB, 5K with one HR.

And then, in a similarly nice turn of events, the Cubs’ offense fought back rather quickly, taking control of the game and never looking back.

Naturally, the game wasn’t without its drama, as the bullpen gave everyone a bit of a scare in the bottom of the eighth. But Caleb Thielbar escaped a bases-loaded jam by striking out Alec Bohm. Thielbar had been on the hook for the loss in each of his last two outings, so it was nice to see him settle back in, especially given the high-leverage/intensity of the moment.

The Cubs had a staggering six players record multi-hit games tonight, including two at the bottom of the order in Kelly and Pete Crow-Armstrong. The offense went 6-for-18 with runners in scoring position, a nice change of pace compared to their recent lackluster performances. They also drew six walks for the fourth time in the last five games, another promising sign moving forward.

Overall, it was an extremely positive game on all sides of the ball. The bats came through when needed, and the pitching staff held the Phillies to just eight hits and four runs. The Cubs will look to win the series tomorrow evening, with Shota Imanaga scheduled to face Jesús Luzardo.

The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is Alex Bregman! Bregman recorded three hits tonight with a trio of RBIs. He tied the game with a run-scoring single in the fifth inning, adding on two more runs with another single the next inning. It’s Bregman’s second three-hit game in a Cubs uniform.
