Around the NBA: Williamson’s Pelicans Fate; Davis Talks Wizards Future; Latest on Reaves, Doncic; More

The 2026 postseason has arrived!

And our Chicago Bulls are far from it. Thank goodness. At long last, we’re without meaningless Chicago Bulls-Miami Heat play-in tournament clashes and can (hopefully) focus on long-term solutions for the team’s future in the offseason.

In the meantime, here are the latest non-play-in developments across the NBA.

Pelicans Don’t Plan to Trade Zion Williamson

Following a largely healthy but deeply depressing 2025-26 regular season run with the New Orleans Pelicans, two-time All-Star forward Zion Williamson reiterated that he plans to stick with the only NBA franchise he’s ever known, according to Brett Martel of the Associated Press.

Team president Joe Dumars apparently feels similarly, according to NOLA.com’s Rod Walker.

“We have no intentions of doing that,” Dumars said. “We are going into the offseason looking forward to Zion coming back next year and playing great again next year.”

Williamson was available for 62 games this year (a solid tally for him), notching respectable averages of 21.0 points, 5.7 boards and 3.2 dimes. He did seem to lack some of his explosiveness after years of injury wear and tear. Williamson has never been a great defender, and it’s unclear exactly how much Dumars is willing to pay him once he becomes extension-eligible. The 25-year-old is still owed a combined $87.1 million across the next two seasons.

Even with Williamson available, the 26-56 Pelicans finished just five games better than their record last season — although this summer, they won’t even have a lottery pick to show for it. Dumars traded that away to the Atlanta Hawks for the rights to No. 13 pick Derik Queen, for some reason.

Anthony Davis Intends to Talk Franchise Future with Wizards Brain Trust

10-time All-Star Washington Wizards power forward/center Anthony Davis announced his intentions of having an offseason sitdown with president Michael Winger and general manager Will Dawkins to discuss the club’s plans for its future, per The Athletic’s Josh Robbins.

The 33-year-old former NBA champ apparently is hoping to hear how Winger and Dawkins will build retool their roster into a contender, around himself, four-time All-Star point guard Trae Young (who, like Davis, barely played upon his arrival), 2024 No. 2 draft pick Alex Sarr, promising rookie wing Tre Johnson, and Washington’s presumably high-grade 2026 NBA Draft lottery selection.

“I’ve been in this league a long time, and I’ve been with losing teams, been on losing teams,” Davis said. “It’s very hard to be a losing team and then a championship contender, right? I think one team has only done it: Boston in ’08.”

“So, if something comes out of the conversation where that’s the path — and, obviously, you won’t know until the season starts — that’s what I would like to see,” Davis added. “What is our plan for winning going into next season? And how? Not like this is a plan, but how do we execute that? And based on that, we’ll kind of see what happens.”

It sure sounds like Davis is convinced there’s going to be a robust market for his services. But who exactly would want the two years and $121.3 million (assuming Davis picks up his player option for 2027-28) remaining on the big man’s contract?

He’s missed an average of 37.2 contests across the past six seasons, including 62 this year (although some of that may have been a Wizards tank job, after the Dallas Mavericks flipped him at the deadline).

Lakers Without Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves Indefinitely As Playoffs Loom

The No. 4-seeded Los Angeles Lakers (53-29) will kick off their playoff run this weekend without their two players.

Head coach JJ Redick acknowledged during a presser this week, in no uncertain terms, that six-time All-Star guard Luka Doncic and rising star guard Austin Reaves don’t yet have a timetable for returns from injury, reports Dave McMenamin of ESPN.

“They’re out indefinitely,” Redick asserted. “I’m not going to have an update for you this week. They’re out indefinitely.”

Doncic went overseas in an effort to treat his Grade 2 hamstring strain, suffered during an April 2 blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Reaves incurred a Grade 2 oblique strain in that 139-96 defeat (that’s not a typo).

It seems unlikely that either player will, realistically, be back with Los Angeles in time to play at all against the Houston Rockets in their first-round contest. Houston has been without starting point guard Fred VanVleet all season, a vulnerability the team weirdly opted not to address at the trade deadline. So there’s at least a chance that the Lakers find a way to rally against another incomplete club — although their deficits are far worse.

    Odds & Ends

With the postseason now officially underway, the league has announced the schedule for this year’s highly anticipated 2026 NBA Draft at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The first round of selections will be revealed on Tuesday, June 23, with the second round slated for Wednesday, Jun 24. All-Star forwards LeBron James and Brandon Ingram wrapped up the regular season as the NBA’s final Players of the Week, according to a league statement. 22-time Lakers All-Star James notched averages of 24.0 points, 9.7 assists and 6.0 boards while pushing LA to a 3-1 record and the Western Conference’s No. 4 seed — where the Lakers will likely lose against the Houston Rockets. It marks James’ 70th such honor. Ingram averaged 25.5 points on 57.8 percent field goal shooting and 6.5 boards, while helping Toronto go 3-1 to finish up its regular season with a 46-36 overall record.
