Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Amarillo on Wednesday.
Gurriel will play seven innings of defense in the Sod Poodles’ game against Double-A Frisco (Texas Rangers), according to the Diamondbacks. Gurriel will be in the lineup again on Thursday as he works his way back from the injured list.
The veteran suffered a torn ACL on Sept. 1, 2025, requiring season-ending surgery. His progression has been faster than anticipated, giving the Diamondbacks optimism that he could be back in their lineup by the end of April. The Diamondbacks placed him on the 10-day IL to start the season as opposed to stashing him on the 60-day IL.

Manager Torey Lovullo has said several times that the expectation is for Gurriel to start mostly at designated hitter upon returning from the injury.
Gurriel played 407 games for the D-backs over the previous three seasons, averaging 20 home runs and 79 RBIs per year in the middle of the lineup.
Arizona’s lineup has suffered several blows early this season, as Jordan Lawlar and Pavin Smith are both on the 60-day IL with injuries sustained within a couple weeks of the season starting.
The Sod Poodles — a roster with D-backs prospects Druw Jones, Cristofer Torin and Jansel Luis — play Frisco at 4:35 p.m. MST on Wednesday.
