Online gaming safety: Roblox announces new safety measures for children with age-based accounts and expanded parental controls

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Popular gaming app Roblox recently announced it’s stepping up its safety measures to keep kids safe online while playing their favorite games.

Roblox says it’s introducing two new age-based accounts and expanding its parental controls, all aimed to limit the types of games and content young children can access and also how they communicate with other players in-game.

“In cybersecurity, we often talk about the seesaw. On one side, you have security, and on the other side you have convenience. When one side goes up, the other side goes down,” Jonathan Weissman, a principal lecturer of cyber security at the Rochester Institute of Technology, said.

“It’s a step in the right direction, but it’s not a complete solution. Parents should still be involved with what their children are doing and monitor them as well,” Weissman said.

The two new account types are Roblox Kids and Roblox Select. The Kids account will cover ages 5 through 8, where the chat feature is automatically disabled. For children ages 9 through 15, they’ll be under Roblox Select. The account types will affect what kinds of games your child can access. The company says ages will be verified through its age-check technology system or a verified parent.

“The initial form of age verification is a series of selfies that are taken. Alternative ways to perform age verification using official IDs and parents giving consent, those are big also,” Weissman said.

The company says parents will also have greater control and be able to see what their children are playing.

“Today, it’s all about Roblox. But there’s so many other video games out there or just online forums and just teaching your kid how to be safe online and to not share sensitive information and how to interact,” Ben Garvey at Great Lakes Gaming said.

Roblox has more than 150 million active users every day. At least seven states have sued Roblox over issues of child safety, with more states investigating their own potential cases. News10NBC reported on multiple arrests locally of men accused of using the app’s communication features to have sexual conversations with children.

“This system has to work for millions of users. So it’s inevitable that mistakes are going to be made. There are still ways to bypass the system at this moment in time before the changes are rolled out. But even when the changes are rolled out, we have to wonder if some of those safeguards can be bypassed as well,” Weissman said.

People who haven’t completed an age-check will be limited to games rated minimal or mild, and all in-game communication will be unavailable. Users who have been checked for being over the age of 16 will not see any changes to their gaming experience.

Roblox says it plans to roll out these features in early June.
