BRIGHTON, N.Y. — A tree fell on a home on Southland Drive in Brighton, leaving significant damage. The homeowner said she was just feet away from where the tree landed in her home and heard a loud crack before seeing her ceiling collapse. Nobody was hurt.
Photos posted by the Henrietta Fire District showed the tree lying across the roof. The tree was removed, but a tarp covered the roof and debris was scattered throughout the backyard.

The tree broke about five or six feet off the ground. Local arborist Dave Pitt came by to check it out and said the darker wood was rotting, likely the result of a lightning strike from decades ago.
Pitt said white pines like this tree are prone to snapping. He said the best way to prevent this is to have trees looked at regularly.
“It is why it’s important to get your property evaluated from time to time for your trees, for the trees surrounding them, and what possibly could happen or should happen or may happen. And what you can do to prevent it is many times we take things down. We trim them. We hold things back. Whatever it calls for with the given trees,” Pitt said.
Pitt said getting trees evaluated shouldn’t be a one-time thing. It’s something homeowners should do at different points throughout the year to see how trees are reacting to different weather conditions.
Pitt said the trees surrounding the one that fell do look healthy, but it’s still worthwhile to have them checked out. The homeowners said they’re looking into getting them removed.
