On January 1st, Bulgarian freshman Samuil Danailov arrived on campus at California Baptist University. On January 2nd, California Baptist University announced they would be cutting three men’s athletics programs due to the “ever evolving intercollegiate athletic landscape” including the men’s swimming and diving team.
Danailov signed to join the program at CBU in March of 2025 and began making preparations to move from Bulgaria to the United States. The morning of January 2nd, Danailov had his first practice for CBU, and met his teammates for the first time, saying, “It was awesome…everything was going well.”
Around 11:00 a.m., the team received a message from their head coach, Jim Bossert, that the team needed to have a meeting, which Danailov said he thought would be a place for him to formally meet the team.
When they arrived, Dr. Micah Parker, the Vice President for Athletics at CBU, was there. Danailov said, “with three sentences, he told us that they are [sic] cutting three men’s programs including swim and dive. Everyone was sobbing, but I was just standing there because I was in shock.”
CBU was coming off a very strong season in 2025, which saw two individual athletes earn individual NCAA Invites and Remi Fabiani scoring four individual points for the team.
The Lancer men were able to enter the transfer portal that afternoon and coaches started reaching out shortly after.
Danailov said, “After we got cut, I was considering if I wanted to stay in America, but after a couple of days I decided to pursue my swimming career here.” Danailov will be transferring to Saint Mary’s College of California, which is adding a Division I men’s and women’s program for the fall of 2026.
Following the program getting cut, CBU had another two months of their season, but Danailov said the “environment was kind of strange.” He said the team was still training and putting in work, but that his teammates said the “environment was better in the first semester.”
In February, the men’s team competed at their final MPSF Championships, where they finished 4th out of six teams. Danailov scored 10 points for the team and swam on three of the Lancer relays. He finished 16th in the 50 free (20.73), 13th in the 100 free (44.74), and 12th in the 200 free (1:39.18).
He will remain in the MPSF for next season with the Saint Mary’s Gaels who have hired Ellie Monobe, the former Pepperdine head coach, to lead the men’s and women’s programs.
