An insider close to French interior minister Laurent Nuñez told global news agency AFP Tuesday (April 14) that the politician is looking to ban West from hitting the stage for his June 11 concert at Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome.
The source relayed to the AFP that Nuñez is “highly determined” and exhausting all options to make sure West’s show is canceled due to his series of antisemitic hate speech in the past few years. Nuñez had already started the process to ban the rapper from traveling to France to perform while discussing the matter with the mayor of Marseille, Benoît Payan, during a visit earlier in April, the insider added to the news agency.
Billboard has reached out to Ye’s reps for comment.
Payan previously opposed West’s performance and voiced on X in March that Ye’s “not welcome at the Vélodrome.”
“I refuse to let Marseille be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unapologetic Nazism,” Payan wrote on X March 4. “Kanye West is not welcome at the Vélodrome, our temple of living together and of all Marseillais.”
West had been slated to headline three nights of Wireless Fest in London in July. However, the festival was canceled April 7 after the Home Office blocked Ye from entering the U.K. after denying the polarizing artist an Electronic Travel Authorization visitor visa.
Jewish organizations spoke out against Wireless Fest’s decision to book West, along with the U.K. prime minister Keir Starmer and Sadiq Khan, who criticized having him headline the festival.
Yeezy released a statement about his goals to bring “unity, peace and love” to London and showed an openness to meet with leaders of the Jewish community in the U.K., but the ban stood.
“My only goal is to come to London and present a show of change, bringing unity, peace and love through my music,” he said in a statement on April 7 ahead of the festival’s cancellation. “I would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the U.K. in person, to listen. I know words aren’t enough — I’ll have to show change through my actions. If you’re open, I’m here.”
Ye previously penned an apology to the Jewish and Black communities for his actions, which included releasing a song in 2025 titled “Heil Hitler” and selling T-shirts with the swastika logo, in the Wall Street Journal in January. He also blamed his behavior on a brain injury.
West returned with his Bully album on March 28, which was followed by a pair of shows at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 1 and April 3.
