Is Thrash on Netflix based on a true story?

Films mixing adverse weather conditions with terrifying shark attacks aren't exactly a new phenomenon – just look at the Sharknado franchise for evidence.

And brand new Netflix disaster film Thrash – which has climbed to the top spot in the streamer's Top 10 list this week – has now become the latest movie to combine those two deadly elements.

The thriller is written and directed by Violent Night filmmaker Tommy Wirkola, and stars Bridgerton's Phoebe Dynevor as Lisa, a pregnant woman who is trapped in a coastal town after a horrifying storm named Hurricane Henry hits that leads to severe flooding and an onslaught of shark attacks.

Although it seems like quite a far-fetched scenario, you might be wondering if the film has any basis in real events? Read on for everything you need to know.

Is Thrash on Netflix based on a true story?

The simple answer – you probably won't be too surprised to learn – is that the film is not based on a true story. There has never been a real category 5 hurricane called Hurricane Henry, and the shark attacks depicted in the film are entirely fictional – as is the town of Annieville.

The film opens with on-screen text that reads: "Since 1980 the intensity, frequency and duration of Atlantic Hurricanes have increased 250%. While wind and rainfall pose serious dangers, the most deadly threat is posed by the storm surge..."

While it is true that there has been an increase in these metrics in that time span – and that the storm surge is indeed especially deadly – there do not appear to be precise figures that confirm this specific 250% estimate.

Meanwhile, at several points during the film it is mentioned that this particular storm may be strong enough for it to be labelled a category 6 hurricane. In reality, no such classification exists – with category 5 the highest that can be reached on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale, at least for now.

Still, it would appear that writer/director Tommy Wirkola has taken at least some inspiration from the horrors posed by real-life natural disasters, even if he's mixing in a fair bit of disaster movie hyperbole as well.

And indeed climate scientist Chris Gloninger and National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Merchant both worked as a consultants on the film to ensure there was some level of accuracy.

“The argument has been made that there should be a category 6 added to that scale because the category 5 storm is open-ended, and the wind damage relationship… goes up exponentially,” Gloninger explained in an interview with Tudum.

Meanwhile, Adam McKay – who served as a producer on the film – was keen that Thrash have some real world relevance, and that it would function as a disaster film about our changing climate.

"What seemed like a heightened premise when Tommy pitched it to us has now become much more of a reality," he explained.

"You saw down in Australia, they had torrential, historic, climate-fuelled floods, and the floods kicked a bunch of dirty water into the ocean. Bull sharks love dirty water to hunt. So they had four shark attacks in a 48-hour period because of the turgid water."

So, in other words, yes Thrash is a fictional story – but it's not quite as far-fetched as you might hope...

Thrash is now streaming on Netflix.
