Let’s start our Tuesday with a great, in-depth read from Scott Powers at The Athletic on the mystique around Blackhawks prospect Roman Kantserov. As Powers notes, “His 36 goals and 64 points were the most ever in a season by an under-23 player. He was the first 21-year-old to lead the league in goals since Kirill Kaprizov in 2018-19.”
But, as Powers notes, the lack of international exposure leads to questions about Kantserov’s production transferring to the NHL. And, as Powers writes, because of that lack of international play, Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson hasn’t had a chance to watch him play in person yet. Here’s a good quote from Davidson on what he’s seen from Kantserov this season on tape:
“A lot of his goals come either on the rush or in zone, kind of cycle plays, and he finds an open spot in the slot or right in front of the net,” Davidson said. “Those feel like transferable goals and goals that should be scored in any league that you play in. It’s not necessarily low-percentage shots that just happen to go in for him. They’re high-percentage chances that are going in, but he’s working to create those for himself.”
Roman Kantserov had a KHL season unlike any under-23 player before him. What led to his season? How transferable are his skills to NHL? What does it mean for the Blackhawks? That and more t.co/rmh7Q1JRKQ
— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) April 13, 2026 On Monday, I shared how Scott Wheeler ranked Blackhawks prospects in his latest top 100 drafted prospect rankings. He has Kantserov ranked No. 16 in the league and the No. 3 right winger. For all of the guys who are limping into the offseason for the Blackhawks, Ryan Greene is finishing on a high note. He’s scored in consecutive games, including his first career short-handed goal on Monday night. He’s now up to 11 goals and has done a nice job bouncing all over the lineup this season. I appreciated something Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said after last night’s loss. He was asked about Buffalo’s turnaround this season and if the Blackhawks can be like that soon. His response included pointing out the high profile defensive group they have (two former No. 1 overall picks, a No. 4 overall pick and an early-second rounder) and that they finally made the transition from being young and incredibly talented to really good. When will that happen for the Blackhawks’ young group? “That’s up to us.” However, this quote from last week has not aged well. At all.Over their last four home games, Blashill said the Blackhawks want to show their fans "how good we can be and how good we will be."
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) April 8, 2026 The folks at The Athletic polled more than 20 of the top player representatives for their annual agents poll this season and published their findings on Monday. The Blackhawks received one vote in two categories. They received one vote for being the easiest front office to work with, which is nice. They also received one vote for being the worst-run organization. While I’m sure that will thrill some of the folks in the comments here, the Carolina Hurricanes also received one vote in that category. So… take that as you will. One other interesting comment from that piece came in response to a question about how much Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini will get on their next contracts. On the notion of going short-term to take advantage of a rising cap and get more on a third contract: “I think they’re going to do what [Auston] Matthews did and keep hitting doubles and triples and not going for the grand slam because the grand slam will actually be in total less than the doubles and triples at the end of the day.”
For those already focusing on the 2026 NHL Draft in our midst, Canada named their camp roster for the 2026 U-18 Men’s World Championship. There are plenty of draft-eligible players on the list who could interest the Blackhawks in the first and second rounds in June. I’ve mocked Michigan forward Adam Valentini to the Blackhawks in the second round a few times. At the top of the draft board, if you’re one of those advocating for another defenseman being added to the organ-I-zation, Keaton Verhoeff is on the list.Keaton Verhoeff has been named to Team Canada for the upcoming U-18 World Championships! : t.co/StM7MGSAyQ#UNDproud | #LGH pic.twitter.com/EkdDrUo8Qe
— North Dakota Hockey (@UNDmhockey) April 13, 2026 Speaking of Verhoeff and others whose names will be called early in the 2026 NHL Draft, Frank Seravalli was on the Blackhawks’ pregame show last night and did a little draft talk.Full Frank Seravalli draft segment on the pregame show: pic.twitter.com/NISh2jEWTe
— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) April 14, 2026 The Philadelphia Flyers clinched their first playoff berth since 2020 last night. And, in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they’ll play… the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Los Angeles Kings clinched a playoff berth last night, which is great for them with their captain and long-time leader calling it a career at the end of this season. However, with that being said, the Kings making the playoffs means the Toronto Maple Leafs will receive Buffalo’s second-round pick via LA to complete the Scott Laughton trade. It looks like Kings fans should start planning their trips to Toronto in three years. Jonathan Quick confirmed before Monday’s Rangers-Panthers game that he’s calling it a career. He’ll join Anže Kopitar on the ballot. Two all-time great Kings should go in together. One last time between the pipes for JQ32 pic.twitter.com/QaJed7CcZ6
— New York Rangers (@NYRangers) April 13, 2026 Finally, since we’re on the subject of the Hockey Hall of Fame in the future… Patrick Kane became the first American NHL player to reach 1,400 career regular-season points last night.SHOWTIME HITS 1,400 Patrick Kane becomes the 24th player in NHL history to notch 1,400 points! pic.twitter.com/gZ541DyAL0
