Why would a celebrity want to go on I’m A Celebrity? Money, obviously – Coleen Rooney and Nigel Farage reportedly banked £1.5 million for their stint in the jungle. But there are other reasons: to repair a fractured reputation, to remind us they exist in an effort to flog their next project, and – on the very rare occasion – the admirable desire to just give it a go. But when it comes to former boxer David Haye, his MO seems to be to rile up the nation.
In last night’s episode of the South Africa-based spin-off, we watched as the campmates sat down around the campfire to learn about Haye’s girlfriend. “She’s lovely,” he began, before dropping one of the most sexist, misogynistic – not to mention utterly bananas – comments I’ve ever heard on primetime TV: “She’s got the personality of a proper ugly bird.” Sorry, what?
He went on: “Most ugly girls realise they’re not pretty enough – they’ve got to have a personality to banter and tell jokes to overlook that they’re not aesthetically amazing straight away … [pretty girls] don’t have to have a personality, because most super pretty girls are idiots. Their ugly friend has to work a bit harder; they need to be more personable, be more nice to everyone.” I couldn’t believe my ears.
Immediately, the women of the camp sprang into action. “You can’t say that David,” shouted TV personality Scarlett Moffatt, telling him he was “talking s**t”, while Corrie legend Beverley Callard branded his comments “complete claptrap”. Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts had the same wide-eyed disbelief on her face as I did.
This isn’t the first time Haye has been rude to or about women in this series. Twice we have seen him choose men as teammates over women under the impression that they would be stronger – both physically and mentally – and therefore improve his team’s performance in tasks (never mind that it meant sending 69-year-old Callard to the basic camp). He has also exposed his own fatphobia when he responded to Gemma Collins’s comment about having thick hair with a sly: “It definitely isn’t thin.”
The spin-off series was filmed last year (Photo: Lifted Entertainment/ITV)Unlike the annual version of the show, I’m A Celebrity… South Africa isn’t live, so it’s difficult for ITV to be reactive to the outrage Haye’s comments has stoked. Having said that, as far as we know, production didn’t intervene at the time of filming and speak to Hayes about the sexism he had displayed.
In fact, ITV seems at pains to protect him from our fury via the show’s editing. Twice on the same episode as his sexist comments, we watched him help Gemma Collins up from her hammock, painting him as – in her words – “a gentleman”. Ant and Dec spent their links laughing at Haye’s comments with an ‘oh, what is he like’ camaraderie, playing it down as if it was just another fun evening of camp banter.
But I’m A Celeb doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and there’s absolutely nothing funny about it. Hearing a man makes those comments on such a popular show arguably emboldens those who share his views. By laughing off even seemingly minor instances of misogyny, there is a risk we are allowing more damaging bigotry to go unchallenged.
We’re currently living through a misogyny crisis, in which the dangerously sexist manosphere is spreading lies and hatred about women to young men all around the world. A recent survey from King’s College London found that a third of gen Z believed that a women should “obey” her husband; the same study found that 44 per cent of people agree that “we have gone so far in promoting women’s equality that we are discriminating against men”.
To hear Haye spout such vile misogyny and, crucially, get away with it is yet further proof that the denigration of women has gone mainstream.
But women up and down the country tune into I’m A Celeb for a bit of light entertainment – to watch has-beens eat bugs, not to be insulted and degraded. This bile – and indeed the people who spew it – should have no place on primetime television.
