Michele Val Jean, creator and head writer of Beyond the Gates, is reflecting on the show’s first season and sharing some of her favorite storylines.
In a recent interview with Marcus James Dixon for Golden Derby, Val Jean discussed the show’s first season, the upcoming Daytime Emmys, and potential future guest stars.
During the interview, she highlighted several standout storylines from the show’s debut season.
“I loved Martin's story, what happened by the side of the road with the racists,” Val Jean said.

During the incident, two men approached them and made racist threats. When the situation escalated, Martin killed one of the men in self defense and severely injured the other. Years later, the surviving man resurfaced, reigniting the danger before ultimately being killed himself, just as Martin prepared to reveal the truth to the public.
She also pointed to another major arc, adding, “I loved the breakup of Ted and Nicole's marriage, with the bomb Leslie dropped in the middle of their anniversary party.”
