The Arizona Diamondbacks suffered their most 2025-esqe loss of the 2026 season on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles, blowing a 7-1 lead in an 9-7 defeat.
The D-backs spoiled Nolan Arenado’s two home runs, as his bat came to life after a very slow start to his Arizona tenure.
Ketel Marte homered twice, as well, leading off the game with a 443-foot shot to Eutaw Street behind the right-field seats.
And starting pitcher Ryne Nelson grinded through 5.1 innings with one earned run and seven strikeouts.

For a bullpen that had been pitching very well, especially on this East Coast road trip, Monday was an ugly reminder of the wild blown leads the club experienced last year, from the 10-run inning at Wrigley Field to the 14-12 Colorado Rockies game.
Arenado went yard for a three-run shot in the sixth inning to take a six-run lead.
Nelson came back out for the bottom half, giving up a double to Pete Alonso and striking out Samuel Basallo. That punch out ended Nelson’s performance at 92 pitches, as he was positioned to secure a win with a seemingly safe cushion.
How did the Diamondbacks blow the lead in Baltimore?
It was not reliever Taylor Rashi’s night.
Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Jeremiah Jackson, and after throwing five straight balls, Rashi hung a slider that looked like it was moving in slow motion over the middle of the plate.
Jackson hit a grand slam, putting the Diamondbacks in an all-too familiar position of battling in a one-run game close. Rashi had not allowed a run over his first three major league innings this year but was tagged with four runs on Monday.
Jonathan Loaisiga came in to nurse the tight lead in the seventh after back-to-back impressive outings in Philadelphia. This was a step back, as he hit Taylor Ward with a fastball on a 2-2 count to lead off the inning and served Alonso a middle-middle curveball, which Alonso smashed for the go-ahead home run.
Jackson went yard again in the eighth inning off Andrew Hoffmann.
The Diamondbacks’ bullpen had gone four games without giving up a run, as it was a catalyst to winning the series in Philadelphia over the weekend.
The last time Arizona’s bullpen allowed multiple earned runs in a game was on April 3, when Paul Sewald gave up back-to-back home runs to the Atlanta Braves. It had been eight straight games where the unit was largely excellent (0.92 ERA).
Perhaps the group was due, but the blowup will test the club’s ability to bounce back and avoid a series loss on Tuesday.
The D-backs have responded well to losses so far this year, especially after the opening series in Los Angeles, but losing a game that was in hand can be a deflating feeling they will have to shake off.
Perhaps the return of a certain mainstay will help.
Diamondbacks’ next game, featuring Merrill Kelly
The Diamondbacks and Orioles play again on Tuesday a 3:35 p.m. MST with starting pitcher Merrill Kelly set to make his season debut after coming off the injured list (back).
Kelly will make his D-backs re-debut after signing back to Arizona during the offseason.
Left-hander Trevor Rogers will pitch for Baltimore after a strong start to the year (2-0, 1.89 ERA).
