IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — The Irondequoit Police Department says its drone unit is playing a growing role in search and rescue operations and emergency response.
IPD says the drone unit, launched a few years ago, can help in critical emergencies, including missing person cases. The drones use infrared and regular cameras to help locate people in difficult terrain and provide aerial views for situational awareness.
“As the drone is flying, we can switch between camera views, and what we’ll use largely is — if we’re looking in, say, a denser area, you know, it’s a lot of wood or vegetation or forest type setting — what we can use is we can use the infrared, and there’s different settings for that for us to be able to see where we see different heat signatures, and that’ll kind of help us focus in on … maybe an area that’s of interest to us,” said Lt. Jason Murphy with the Irondequoit Police Department.
The unit continues to expand. Lt. Murphy also told News10NBC that IPD helped the Department of Public Works after the recent landslide off Carlsam Drive, allowing them to see some of that damage from above.
