Irondequoit landslide victims stuck in limbo as county searches for financial assistance to repair damage

IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Homeowners affected by a landslide in Irondequoit met with town officials but are still left with questions about next steps. Dave Stafford and Nary Rin met with the Town of Irondequoit on Monday.

The town walked them through the permit process if they want to fill the hole themselves.

“Basically what they told us that as long as we’re not proposing anything ridiculous that they would approve it. However, based on our conferences with the state and the county, we have been advised not to move forward yet with any sort of protection of our property, for fear of us being liable or any other damage that’s caused by what we do,” Stafford said.

At this point, Rin is out of his house after the fire marshal ordered him to evacuate. Rin first told News10NBC about the landslide on April 3.

“We can certainly see the damage progressing,” Rin said. When asked how the forecast of more rain makes them feel, Rin said they are terrified.

Stafford had an arborist come out Monday to monitor the situation. David Pitt with Dinosaur Tree and Landscape said he is looking at the trees on the move and wants to see how much they are moving.

He is also looking at the soil that is moving and seeing what is holding things up. Stafford and Rin said they are grateful for the community’s response.

A local contracting company, Rochester Roofing, came out and rerouted their gutters so the water would go in front of the house instead of behind to help with erosion.

The Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District told News10NBC its staff went out last week. The erosion appears to be a combination of things.

Below are some of the highlights from its observations.

According to the USDA Soil Survey, AtF3 is the soil type – Arkport soils are typically easily erodible/very fine sandy loam in the upper profile and loamy fine sand in lower subsoils – this is consistent with the soils observed Erosion appears to be a rotational slump caused be the combined factors of: steep embankment with sandy/erodible soils streambank erosion/long-term loss of toe support along the creek (via aerial photography maps, the creek appeared to meander directly along the lower embankment in a “horseshoe” pattern) heavily saturated soils – March 2026 was highest recorded rain on record, plus the ~2” +/- rainstorm in late March which appears to have most likely been the final event to initiate the slope failure

The district said it is doing outreach to find financial assistance to fix the failure as it will be extensive work to fix the site.
