A Russian naval vessel is currently “waiting” in the Channel, The i Paper can reveal.
The Kremlin Amur Class Repair Ship PM-82, a 122m floating workshop designed for maintaining Vladimir Putin’s Baltic fleet of ships, was monitored by Nato Maritime Command (MARCOM) on Monday evening.
The ship is designed for the upkeep of ships and submarines, with 18 currently believed to be in the Russian Navy.
The vessel was spotted loitering at the eastern entrance of the English Channel, around 50km off the coast of Colchester. A senior Nato source confirmed the ship’s location and said they believed the ship was “waiting”.
A UK Border Force vessel was spotted sailing near the Russian naval ship, according to data provided by Starboard Maritime Intelligence. The UK CWind Typhoon is on contract with nearby offshore wind farms.
It is the second sighting of a Russian naval ship in just two weeks after a sanctioned Russian tanker shipped oil, supplies and spare parts for Vladimir Putin’s armed forces through the English Channel, escorted by a Russian warship.
The blacklisted tanker passed through the Channel on Wednesday, followed closely by the Admiral Grigorovich, a Russian frigate armed with cruise and surface-to-air missiles, along with a second sanctioned Russian tanker sailing under a suspected false Cameroon flag.
Despite the UK threatening to seize shadow fleet ships that help fund Moscow’s war with Ukraine, Putin’s vessels continue to test Downing Street’s resolve.
The i Paper has approached the Ministry of Defence for comment.
