Coronation Street stars Alison King and Vicky Myers tease difficult start to married life for Carla and Lisa

Grab your best hat and some confetti, Coronation Street's first ever sapphic wedding is set to air next week. Well, the first ever nuptials between two women to actually go ahead.

Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson) jilted Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) at the alter in 2011, and eight years later a factory fell on top of Rana Habeeb (Bhavna Limbachia) before she was able to wed Kate Connor (Faye Brookes).

Fortunately for Swarla, they actually make it to the reception. The only hurdle the couple have to overcome is a flooded venue, but with thanks to some quick-thinking from Lisa, the ceremony goes ahead in the bar of the Chariot Square Hotel.

    Oh, and there's a murder.

As teased in February's flash-forward episode, Lisa's daughter Betsy (Sydney Martin) will stumble across the body of one of their neighbours that night, something which actress Myers has described as "a trial" for the couple just hours into their new beginning.

"They think the scream is a fox and just carry on watching the fireworks, so it just ends nicely," she explained.

"They are oblivious but it's a great hook. And also it's a trial for them at the start of married life as Betsy is the one who found the body so they have got something difficult to deal with from day one of married life.

"As a family, after what they have been through I think they feel very equipped now to be able to deal with things as a team."

King laughed: "I thought, 'Haha Great! Now that's drama.' That's how it has to be. I'm just glad it wasn't our drama and that the wedding happened and they had their day!"

Let's face it, the beloved couple could do with some happiness after the last 12 months. Lisa's late wife Becky (Amy Cudden) rose from the ashes after spending a number of years in witness protection, drugged Carla and held her hostage in an airing cupboard before attempting to flee to Spain with her family.

Myers hopes that this marriage will be very different to Swain's first.

"I think it's the age that she is, the job that she does, the life that she's had, and including when her dead ex-wife came back," she said.

"All of that means she wants it done. But it's not just a case of wanting it done, she wants to be married to this woman who she's fallen madly in love with, who feels like home to her.

"The complete antithesis of the relationship she'd had before. It's not just about the wedding day, it's about the marriage itself, and she can't wait to start that."

King, meanwhile, is glad that Carla is getting a more lowkey affair: "The surprise reception at Underworld was Carla's favourite bit. She likes to feel that even though she shouts at everybody, they still love her - all the workforce. And she likes that, she likes being part of it, because she's always, always been left out in the whole Connor clan."

"She was always the one that was taken the mickey out of. So she likes to be part of something. Those factory workers are Carla's family. It is her safe place."

Very aptly, the wedding is taking place during Lesbian Visibility Week.

"This relationship promotes understanding and change, especially considering the persistent issue of homophobia and the current gradual retraction of rights despite past progress," Myers reflected.

"To champion this couple, their family unit, and their commitment by having them marry on Coronation Street is an honor and a truly beautiful, history-making moment. Their sexuality doesn't define them, but they are proud of who they are. They offer crucial visibility by confidently showing public affection, their life is not kept behind closed doors.

"Their frequent presence on screen holds the power to prompt lasting change."
