Monroe County announces upcoming hazardous waste and pharmaceutical collection events

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe County is holding several upcoming collection drives for people to dispose of hazardous waste or pharmaceuticals.

There will be four hazardous waste drives, where people can dispose of paint, car fluids, fertilizers, household cleaners, and pool chemicals for free. You can also dispose of medical sharps and vaping devices.

    Before the drive, you must schedule an appointment online here. The hazardous waste drives are happening from 7:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Here’s the list of drives:

    May 16: Perinton Department of Public Works on 100 Cobbs Lane June 13: Ogden Department of Public Works on 2432 South Union St. Sept. 19: Penfield Department of Public Works on 1607 Jackson Rd. Oct. 3: Irondequoit Department of Public Works on 2629 East Ridge Rd.

    There will also be four pharmaceutical collection drives, and appointments aren’t required. People can drop off prescription or over-the-counter medicine, ointments, creams, sprays, inhalers, and sharps. Each drive is happening from 9 a.m. to noon. Here is the list of drives:

    April 18: Churchville Park at the East and West Lodge parking lots on 101 North Main St. June 27: Mt. Read Wegmans on 3701 Mt. Read Blvd. July 18: Hamlin Town Hall on 1658 Lake Rd. Aug. 15: Fairport Road Wegmans on 851 Fairport Rd.

    How to prepare hazardous materials for disposal

    People can dispose of up to 30 gallons of chemicals at the drives. If you plan to dispose of syringes or other sharps, containers should be capped and labeled “SHARPS.” You can use an approved sharps container or another sturdy container, such as a laundry detergent bottle. If you plan to dispose of vaping devices, such as vape pens or electronic cigarettes, they should be in a zip-lock plastic bag.

    How else can you dispose of hazards?

    The Monroe County Ecopark at 10 Avion Drive also accepts electronics, pharmaceuticals, tires, appliances, general recycling, and household waste by appointment only. You can drop items at the Ecopark every Wednesday from 1 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can make an appointment and learn what kind of waste it accepts here.
