Why follow Jeff Passan or Ken Rosenthal when you can follow Sam Bernero? Our intrepid Cubs photographer routinely jumps ahead of roster moves and scoops just by standing outside of Wrigley Field on game day. And we appreciate her greatly for it.
Today, for example, she saw left-handed minor league pitcher Charlie Barnes (who wasn’t even on the 40-man) heading into Wrigley Field.

By my count, the Cubs 40-man roster was at 39 before this move (and they can still send Cade Horton to the 60-day IL), so no other roster move is needed.
As for the move, itself … Barnes has gotten off to a nice start in Iowa so far this year, with two long outings in relief plus one start:

But after looking back into his signing in January, I remember why – Charlie Barnes hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2021, and spent last year not really doing much with the Reds in Triple-A. But before that, he spent four seasons succeeding as a starter in the KBO. He wound up with the Cubs (naturally), because he’s a Tread Athletics guy.
So now, he gets his first shot in The Show in a LOOOOONG time. And with a story like that, how can you not root for him?
Here’s what Brett had to say about Charlie Barnes when the Cubs first signed him back in January.
Charlie Barnes is a 30-year-old left-handed starting pitcher who has appeared in the big leagues before. On the other hand, Barnes hasn’t pitched in the big leagues in five years, most of which were spent in Korea. Although you might be signing him as big league starting depth or a potential big league reliever conversion, the lack of recent time in MLB, paired with a rough go at Triple-A for the Reds in half a season last year, make this feel like something more of a development play. After all, if you can help Barnes make something work, he’d be up in the big leagues as, essentially, a rookie. Older than a typical rookie? More experienced than a typical rookie? Yes and yes.
Barnes had pitched exceedingly well in Korea from 2022-2024, before a rough go in 2025 that preceded the return to the States and a partial season starting for the Reds’ Triple-A club. This time around, he’ll open the year in the States, and get a full Spring Training with the Cubs – something he hasn’t had with an MLB team since 2021.

As for Harvey, this is just going to be the story this year. The guy is supremely talented, but does have a pretty intensive injury history. And so far, opposing batters have been smoking him: 93.2 MPH average exit velocity, 3 barrels on 13 balls in play. Hopefully, he’ll rest up, get right, and come back stronger. I have to imagine the Cubs have late-inning hopes for Harvey this year. We just haven’t seen that guy yet.
