CORVALLIS, Oregon. (KEYT) - Cal Poly has outscored Oregon State 5-0 in the first inning so far this weekend. It's the remaining eight frames that have given the Mustangs some trouble.
The host Beavers, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit for a 6-4 victory Friday night, registered another come-from-behind win Saturday, turning a 3-0 shortfall into an 11-6 triumph.
The two wins inside Goss Stadium at Coleman Field clinched the three-game non-conference baseball series for the No. 7-ranked Beavers (27-7) with one more contest to be played Sunday afternoon.
Cal Poly (18-15) has been outscored 17-7 from the second through ninth innings in suffering its eighth loss in the Mustangs' last 12 games.
Third baseman Alejandro Garza continued his hot streak at the plate with a one-out solo home run in the first inning and, three batters later, left fielder Xander McLaurin added a two-run double to left-center field for a quick 3-0 Mustang lead.
Oregon State, however, scored the next eight runs of the game for an 8-3 cushion. Cal Poly made one last run with a three-run sixth-inning rally. Designated hitter Gavin Spiridonoff doubled down the right-field line for one RBI and the other runs came courtesy of wild pitches.
The Beavers pulled away again with two runs in the sixth and one more in the eighth.
Garza went 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. The junior has four multiple-hit games in his last five starts and nine of his last 14, a team-leading 16 multiple-hit contests for the year, and has lifted his batting average 80 points to .349 over his last 14 games.
McLaurin, Spiridonoff and catcher Ryan Tayman each added two hits as Cal Poly outhit Oregon State 10-9. Both of McLaurin's hits were doubles and he has lifted his batting average 60 points to .310 since and including his 7-for-13, four-RBI performance in the UC Riverside series two weeks ago
Oregon State powered its way to victory with three home runs. First baseman Bryson Glassco smashed a two-run shot in the fourth and a three-run blast in the fifth while third baseman Paul Vazquez added a two-run homer in the second. Glassco now has five home runs and Vazquez six.
Second baseman AJ Singer knocked in three runs with a pair of doubles and designated hitter Bryce Hubbard also had two hits for Oregon State.
Southpaw Ethan Kleinschmit (6-2) earned the victory, though he allowed five runs and six hits over 5 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts. The loss was charged to right-hander Carson Turnquist (2-2), who gave up four runs and four hits in 3 1/3 innings of work on the mound.
Following Friday's 1-hour, 45-minute weather delay due to lightning in the third inning, Saturday's game also was delayed, this time in the sixth inning for 40 minutes because of lightning strikes. Rain fell from the fifth inning through the end of Saturday's contest.
Sunday's series finale begins at 1:05 p.m. Cal Poly will start freshman right-hander Corden Pettey (2-2, 4.75 ERA) while Oregon State will go with junior righty Eric Segura (3-1, 1.50 ERA).
