The world will pay for Trump’s Iran mess

WASHINGTON DC – While the future of the world and the fate of the global economy was hanging in the balance, Donald Trump exhibited an air of apparently deliberate nonchalance over the weekend.

Faced with the prospect of hunkering down in the White House situation room and monitoring his Vice President’s efforts to broker peace with the Iranians in Pakistan, or clambering aboard Air Force One and heading to Miami to watch an Ultimate Fighting Championship bout, the US President opted for the latter.

He even dragged his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, along to the ringside seats with him.

Man-to-man combat was more Trump’s cuppa on Saturday night. Meanwhile, in the metaphorical ring in Islamabad, despite 21 hours of talks, JD Vance proved unable to land the knockout blow that would bring his Iranian interlocutors to their knees.

As Vance packed up and prepared for the long flight back to Washington, he used an interesting turn of phrase to describe the talks’ collapse. “They have chosen not to accept our terms,” the US Vice President said, indicating that Iran had not bent to Trump’s will, even in the face of threatened civilisational annihilation. But he also indicated that his boss might be willing to give Tehran a little more time to wave the white flag.

The Iranians, of course, are fully aware of Trump’s reputation as the “Taco” US President who “always chickens out”, and may themselves be wondering whether they really have secured what Vance termed America’s “final and best offer” given the US leader’s increasing desperation to bring the conflict that he began to a conclusion.

Trump remains stuck between a rock and a hard place. His two key regional allies, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin-Salman, are both piling pressure on the White House to keep the war going, hoping that one day they will wake up in a Middle East rid of the Iranian regime.

Trump, though, is facing escalating pressure from within his own “Make America Great Again” (Maga) camp to find a way out of the potential quagmire into which he has fast-walked America. Having falsely claimed that “regime change” has already occurred in Iran, he wants to strike a Venezuela-style deal to filch the country’s oil and be done with it.

If loud-mouthed Maga influencers like Megyn Kelly (“I’m sick of this shit”), Candace Owens (“he is a genocidal lunatic”) and Tucker Carlson (who called Trump’s civilisational threats “vile on every level”) have their way, US troops would be out of the region tomorrow. Last week, the President found himself waging rhetorical war on all three of his once-vocal supporters, calling them “Low IQs. They’re stupid people….and their views are the opposite of Maga”.
