Coachella's opening weekend got off to a rocky start—and not because of anything happening on stage.
Strong winds tore through the festival grounds the night of Friday, April 10, destroying campsites and sending tents, canopies, and personal belongings flying, with videos of the destruction spreading rapidly across social media.
The South Coast Air Quality Monitoring District had already issued an air quality alert for the Coachella Valley ahead of the weekend due to windblown dust pollution. Meteorologists warned that wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour were expected Friday and Saturday, strong enough to kick up large particulate matter pollution (known as PM10) and trigger serious health concerns.
The National Weather Service cautioned that "particle pollution can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems such as asthma attacks, heart and lung disease symptoms, and increased risk of lung infections.”
The strongest gusts hit during the afternoon and evening hours Friday night, right as the festival was getting underway and after headliner Sabrina Carpenter’s performance.
“Damn I thought this was fyre festival,” one fan joked on a viral Instagram video of the destruction.
One festival goer commented, “It’s bad!!!! We lost 1 but luckily I helped a few settle up for the night till tomorrow.”
“my friends window on his car got broken because the people behind him had their tent fly away…,” a third shared.

The winds ultimately caused more than just campsite chaos. Anyma, the Italian American DJ who makes up one-half of the EDM duo Tale of Us, was set to perform on the main stage at midnight, approximately 90 minutes after Carpenter's headlining set. But at 12:17 a.m., the festival notified attendees of a "schedule update."
"Due to strong wind conditions affecting Anyma's stage build, he is unable to perform tonight," the statement read, per Variety. "Coachella and Anyma have made this decision together with your safety as the priority."
So for festivalgoers heading into weekend two, it might be worth packing a little more than just a flower crown.
