Strug made history at 18 years old after performing her vault routine with an injured ankle during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, which won Team USA a gold medal. On her first attempt on the vault, the gymnast landed wrong and tore ligaments in her left ankle during the team final. Despite the injury, she completed a second vault, sticking her landing on one foot.
She retired from gymnastics shortly after the Olympics and attended UCLA, where she worked as the gymnastics team's manager.
