Round one of the 90th Masters Tournament is complete at Augusta National, and the leaderboard is tightly packed with star power. Defending champion Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns share the clubhouse lead at 5-under 67, with a crowded group close behind. Here is a full recap of how the day unfolded and the updated odds heading into Friday.
Round 1 Recap
The course played firm, fast, and demanding all day. Players described it as “crispy” during practice rounds, and those conditions held through Thursday, making it one of the more difficult scoring environments in recent Masters memory. That firmness made the day’s sub-70 rounds all the more impressive.
McIlroy was not at his sharpest in the opening seven holes, hitting just one fairway on the front nine, but his course management kept him out of trouble while he waited for his swing to arrive. It did in emphatic fashion. Back-to-back birdies on holes 8 and 9 gave him momentum, and he followed with three consecutive birdies at 13, 14, and 15 to surge to the top of the board. He finished with a 67, his second-lowest opening round at Augusta in his career. McIlroy said afterward he probably should have shot around 70 given where he was hitting the ball, which is either humbling or terrifying for the rest of the field depending on how you look at it.
Sam Burns matched him at 5-under with one of the cleanest ball-striking rounds seen at Augusta in some time. He found 11 of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens in regulation and eagled the par-5 second hole to get his round going. Burns has the putting ability to handle Augusta’s greens and if he maintains that tee-to-green precision, he is going to be difficult to catch.
Kurt Kitayama, Jason Day, and Patrick Reed all finished at 3-under 69 to sit two back. Kitayama’s round was eventful, featuring just six pars and a rollercoaster scorecard that included birdies at 10, 13, 15, and 17 alongside a double bogey at the par-3 12th. Reed started brilliantly with a birdie-eagle opening before fading slightly on the back nine. Day posted a clean round that put him firmly in contention.
Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose, and Shane Lowry are at 2-under, three off the pace. Scheffler’s round was interesting. He eagled the par-5 second and birdied the short par-4 third but made pars on 14 of his final 15 holes, unable to take advantage further. It was his sixth consecutive opening round of 70 or higher across his last six Tour starts, a streak he will want to end quickly.
The biggest disappointments of the day were Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm. DeChambeau, coming in off back-to-back LIV wins and with more Augusta National confidence than ever, made a triple bogey at the 11th after taking three attempts to escape a greenside bunker. He finished at 4-over and faces a serious cut challenge. Rahm is also in cut danger after a poor opening round.

Updated Live Odds After Round 1
Rory McIlroy Outright: +240 | Top 5: -230 | Top 10: -550
McIlroy has moved from +1,000 pre-tournament to +240 with the co-lead after round one. The freedom he described playing with since completing the Grand Slam last year appears genuine. His scrambling and course management were elite even when the ball-striking was not. He has been here before, including his playoff win last year after starting the final round eight back. Do not fade him.
Sam Burns Outright: +1000 | Top 5: +146 | Top 10: -162
Burns at 1,000/1 with a share of the first-round lead is one of the more interesting live plays on the board. The ball-striking was pristine. He is a legitimate underdog story who belongs at the top of this leaderboard on current form. The top-5 at +146 is worth serious consideration.
Scottie Scheffler Outright: +360 | Top 5: -170 | Top 10: -410
Three back after round one at Augusta, Scheffler at +360 is a reasonable position for the world number one. He is the only player in the field to finish top 10 in each of the last four Masters. The approach numbers have been a concern all season but he hit 85 percent of fairways Thursday, which is encouraging.
Xander Schauffele Outright: +1025 | Top 5: +140 | Top 10: -175
At 2-under and +1025 outright, Schauffele represents legitimate value. He has five top-10 finishes in seven Masters starts and is playing some of the best golf of his post-injury comeback season. The top-5 at +140 is one of the better prices on the board given his position.
Patrick Reed Outright: +1500 | Top 5: +210 | Top 10: -114
Reed is in great form and always plays his best golf at Augusta. At +1500 three off the lead, the outright is a live ticket. He has finished in the top 12 in five of his past six Masters starts and came in with genuine momentum from the DP World Tour.

Rose is 2-under and three back. He is making his 21st Masters start and knows this course better than almost anyone. After three runner-up finishes including last year’s playoff loss, the question is whether this is his week at last. At +1750 he is worth a small outright stake.
Kurt Kitayama Outright: +3000 | Top 5: +355 | Top 10: +142
Kitayama is one of the pleasant surprises of day one and a player we highlighted as a sleeper pick earlier in the week. He sits at 3-under and is tied for third. The approach play has been elite all season and Augusta is rewarding it. At +3000 outright and +142 for a top-10, there is still genuine value here.
Jason Day Outright: +2100 | Top 5: +260 | Top 10: +106
Day at 3-under and +2100 is one of the cleaner value plays at this stage of the tournament. He has the course history, the ball-striking, and the short game to be a legitimate weekend factor.
Tommy Fleetwood Outright: +2200 | Top 5: +260 | Top 10: +102
Fleetwood does not appear at the top of the leaderboard but has been in the mix all day. He is a player with eight straight made cuts at Augusta and a T-3 in 2024. At +2200 he remains a credible each-way play.
Players to Monitor on the Cut Bubble
Bryson DeChambeau at +10500 and Jon Rahm at +34000 are both in serious danger of missing the cut. Both came into the week with high expectations and both had rounds to forget. DeChambeau’s triple bogey at 11 was the defining moment of a frustrating day. Neither is a live betting target at this stage.
