The roar of engines and the smell of burning rubber are practically in Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s DNA, but his journey to the pinnacle of Formula 1 wasn’t as inevitable as it appears.
Behind the meteoric rise of Grand Prix racing’s newest championship leader lies a story of hesitation, protection, and ultimately, belief from the person who knew the sport best: his father.
Marco Antonelli, a racer in his own right and team owner, had lived both the highs and the harsh realities of motorsport. Naturally, when his son began showing interest in following the same path, he wasn’t immediately convinced.
For a man who had experienced the unforgiving side of racing firsthand, the idea of his child stepping into that world brought more concern than excitement.
Yet passion has a way of breaking through even the strongest reservations. As young Kimi’s enthusiasm grew impossible to ignore, what began as reluctance slowly transformed into support – setting the stage for one of the sport’s most exciting new careers.
A father’s caution, a son’s determination
The 19-year-old Mercedes driver is quick to acknowledge the pivotal role his father played in shaping his journey, even if that support didn’t come instantly.
“It was thanks to my dad,” Antonelli told the BBC. “He has been a racing driver himself and he still is. He’s been running for many, many years his own racing team and it got me into motorsport.
“Since I was very little, I used to spend time with him at the race track during his race weekends, and from then I started to build a passion for motorsport.”
But that early exposure came with a protective barrier. Marco knew too well what racing could take as much as it could give.
“To be honest, to be fair, initially he didn’t want me to race, because he knows how motorsport can be amazing, but at the same time can be brutal,” Antonelli continued.
“He faced it himself as well, the brutal side of motorsport, and he didn’t want me to get affected by it. He didn’t want me to get too disappointed about difficult moments and so on, so he wanted to kind of protect me.”
That resistance didn’t last forever. The young gun’s determination ultimately spoke louder than any doubts.
“He saw that I really cared about it. He didn’t have to push for it. It was me pushing for it, so that’s when he understood that probably I will become a racing driver,” he said.
From karting promise to Formula 1 stardom
Once his father gave his blessing, events began to move quickly. Antonelli’s talent in karting didn’t go unnoticed – catching the attention of influential figures like Giancarlo Minardi, who helped open doors to Formula 1.
“It all started thanks to the Minardi family because they sent a message to Toto [Wolff, Mercedes team principal] about me. Then obviously Toto got interested,” he recounted.
“[At the] end of 2017 he sent over Gwen [Lagrue], he’s the head of the junior programme, and they saw that there was some potential and decided to get me into the academy.
“That was an incredible moment because I remember being in the car with my dad and I remember receiving the call from Toto and we were together and that call was about me getting into the programme and I think it was a really special moment.”
Now racing for Mercedes under the guidance of Toto Wolff, Antonelli has already claimed his first two Grand Prix victories – in China and in Japan.
In Melbourne, confusion ensued when he was introduced as Kimi Räikkönen. While fans often associate him with a certain Finnish world champion, he remains proud of his full identity.

“Obviously Andrea Kimi Antonelli is quite long, the name, but I think everyone calls me Kimi because he’s a very well-known name in the world of motorsport,” he noted.
“For example, we made this box for charity to give away, and initially they wanted to put ‘Kimi Antonelli’, but I asked to put ‘Andrea Kimi Antonelli’ because at the end of the day that’s my full name.
“Of course, I’m more known as Kimi than Andrea, but I think it’s important as well that I show my full name. Obviously, in the world of racing, they only call me Kimi, which I’m fine with it, but at home, my closest friends call me Andrea.”
From a cautious beginning shaped by a father’s concern to a breakthrough fueled by undeniable passion, Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s rise is as much a family story as it is a sporting one – proof that sometimes, the toughest starts lead to the fastest finishes.
