Lucknow Super Giants batter Mukul Choudhary displayed one of the finest knocks of IPL 2026 as he single-handedly took his team over the line in a game that at one point looked to have slipped from the hands of the Super Giants. He has now revealed his idol, who inspired him in the game.
The Lucknow Super Giants and the Kolkata Knight Riders game was another thriller within the initial stages of the highly anticipated contest in the IPL 2026. Mukul Choudhary, whose name had no significance in IPL until yesterday, has made a name for himself as a finisher for the Super Giants.
However, following the third defeat in the season, it is evident that KKR do not have the possible lineup to defend any amount of runs in their 20 overs; hence, their fate does not seem to change with their batters taking control; it can only be affected by the return of their pacers.
Kolkata had done everything right until the final five overs of the innings and were at the edge of their first victory this season; however, no one was aware of a looming storm in the form of Mukul Choudhary, the 21-year-old young wicket-keeper batter from Rajasthan.
The youngster has been part of the LSG lineup since game 1 and could manage 16 runs in two games. He had missed connecting a few balls in the last game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad and was dejected following the poor show. However, the player reveals that it was his skipper who inspired him with his words of wisdom.
"In the last match, I could play just 4-5 balls. I wasn’t dismissed, but I couldn’t connect the ball, then I talked to Rishabh bhaiya, & he told me not to think too much.
"He told me to just follow my process. ‘If you think too much, there will be pressure. See the ball & hit the ball. We believe in you—you should believe in yourself too," revealed young Mukul Choudhary.
"My favourite will always be the same one (MS Dhoni)." - Mukul Choudhary
The role of a wicketkeeper-batter finishing off games in some style is not something new to the Indian fans. Someone had done this for India over nearly two decades, while he has been doing that for the Chennai Super Kings to date.
MS Dhoni, the legendary Indian wicket-keeper batter, has been an inspiration for thousands of Indian keeper-batters, who consider him an idol and his technique a learning manual. Young Mukul is no exception.
"My favourite will always be the same one (MS Dhoni); I mean, he's an idol in a way—we've always looked up to him," he explained.
However, he also credited his captain, the experienced Rishabh Pant, for teaching him so many things within this short period of time. Pant is one of India's best wicket-keeper batters of modern times and is often known as the best character both on and off the field.
"I've learned so many things from bhaiya (Rishabh Pant) too. The confidence he showed in me, and how he's always been explaining things to me, right from the first day he saw me. Every time, in every session, he talks to me and just says: trust yourself, I trust you, and that's it," the LSG star added.
Mukul Choudhary is another outcome of some stunning scouting by LSG
Lucknow Super Giants made their debut in the IPL back in 2022 and, since then, have made it to the playoffs twice in four seasons. However, the team is yet to win a playoff match in the IPL.
Despite that, LSG's scouts have done a fantastic amount of work in recognizing unique talents from several domestic platforms in India. They have brought to light the likes of Ayush Badoni, who has been part of the franchise since season 1.
Last season, they bought Digvesh Rathi, a quality leg-spinner, and Prince Yadav into the IPL. The likes of Mayank Yadav and Mohsin Khan were also scouted by LSG. For this season, their special addition includes 21-year-old Mukul Choudhary, whom they included for a price of INR 2.6 crore.
The batter had a promising season for Rajasthan in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he amassed 280 runs off 10 matches. He has now scored an IPL half-century in a winning cause just within 3 matches of his debut.
