PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WHEC) — Tennis runs in Matthew Irving’s family, but he’s only been playing for a few seasons.
“Really not until a couple years ago. I used to play basketball but I didn’t make the school team and then I just picked up a racket and I’ve been liking the game every since,” Irving said.
It didn’t take long at all for Irving to go from trying it out to starring on Pittsford Mendon’s team. He recalled playing a teammate named Moussa – just for fun – who encouraged him to try out.
“We played and he was like you’re actually pretty good, you should tryout this year and so I did it,” Irving said. “I played JV that year and the next year I was on varsity.”
Irving showed determination to become good at tennis, and along the way developed patience, because he plays doubles instead of singles.

And Irving has really aced the mindset to be a doubles tennis star.
“I find it more relaxing honestly than singles, because you have someone to work with, you have a teammate out there and I’m just able to be more calm, knowing there’s another guy and I have a teammate on the same side of the court as me,” Irving said.
Next year, he’s playing on Binghamton’s club team. In school, he’ll study engineering with the same determination he brings to the court.
“I really enjoy it and I get a lot of satisfaction once my work comes to fruition and I see the results from the hard work that I put in. It’s so rewarding,” Irving said.
