Carrboro Resident Faces Drug Trafficking and Unsafe Driving Charges After Pursuit, Crash with Sheriff’s Deputies

A Carrboro man faces a myriad of charges after a pursuit across southern Orange County and parts of Chatham County on Wednesday that ended with a crash after he rammed a sheriff’s deputy’s patrol vehicle.

A release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday said 40-year-old Kevin Tyler Brown was arrested after failing to comply during a motor vehicle stop around Jones Ferry Road and N.C. Highway 54 shortly after 12 p.m. The deputy tried to pull over Brown for having a fake license tag on the Ford Fiesta he was driving, and he began to drive “in a reckless and erratic manner” while trying to flee, according to the report. His extended escape attempt included sideswiping a vehicle he improperly passed and a deliberate turn into a deputy’s patrol car. After that move, Brown crashed into a ditch and the vehicle came to a stop.

Following the crash, Orange County Sheriff deputies arrested Brown — who had been absconding his probation or parole supervision for past crimes. A search of his vehicle resulted in finding narcotics and cash, according to the release, which led deputies to take out a search warrant for Brown’s Carrboro residence. Investigators found “trafficking amounts” of fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine, which added more felony charges to his case.

In total, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office charged Brown with the following offenses:

Flee to elude arrest (felony) Assault with a deadly weapon on a government official (felony) Possession with intent to sell and deliver Schedule II controlled substance (2 counts, felony) Possession with intent to sell and deliver Schedule IV controlled substance (felony) Maintaining a vehicle or dwelling place for the use, storage, or sale of a controlled substance (2 counts, felony) Trafficking in methamphetamine (3 counts, felony) Trafficking in fentanyl (felony) Failure to heed lights or siren (misdemeanor) Reckless driving with wanton disregard for the rights/safety of others (misdemeanor) Hit/Run leave scene property damage (misdemeanor) Driving with a fictitious tag (misdemeanor) Window tinting violation (misdemeanor) Failure to stop at a stop sign (2 counts, misdemeanor) Driving the wrong way on a dual-lane highway (infraction) Unsafe passing into oncoming traffic (infraction) Possession of drug paraphernalia (misdemeanor) Operating a vehicle without liability insurance (misdemeanor) Failure of driver to wear seat belt (infraction)

Because of his probation violations, the local magistrate ordered Brown be held without bond in the Orange County Detention Center while he is tried on the charges. He made his first appearance in Orange County court on Thursday at 2 p.m.
