Korchinski’s Improvement, Moore Skates, Carolina Call-Ups, Ovechkin’s Future? and Other Blackhawks Bullets

If I told you over the past five games, the same player on the Blackhawks has the best 5-on-5 shot attempts for percentage, on-ice expected goals for percentage and on-ice scoring chances for percentage, who would be your first guess? Frank Nazar? Tyler Bertuzzi? Ilya Mikheyev? Connor Bedard?

The answer to al three of those is Kevin Korchinski.

And, according to Natural Stat Trick, Korchinski’s on-ice expected goals for percentage (57.84) is more than eight percent better than anyone else on the Blackhawks’ roster over the five games since he we re-inserted into the lineup.

After practice on Wednesday, Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill was asked about Korchinski taking advantage of his opportunity of late:

“The injury’s unfortunate for [Matt] Grzelcyk, but this gives [Korchinski] an opportunity to show (how) he can help us win hockey games. … When he plays his best, to me he’s a guy who uses his feet to break the puck out, and then hit to make really good passes. That’s where I think he does his best. He uses his feet to defend. we don’t need him to necessarily be a big guy who’s taking it end to end. There are maybe two defensemen who do that in the league. Use your feet as a breakout machine and move the puck to the open guy and he’s done a pretty good job of that.”

Ben Pope wrote a good story at the Chicago Sun-Times on Korchinski emerging late in the season and the plan for him to continue this improvement moving forward on Tuesday. It sounds like he’s going to stay in Chicago this summer and get after it with the training options that are available to him. That’s a great move.

Kevin Korchinski's last two games have been arguably his best in the NHL.Now, he has a summer plan that he hopes will help him take the next step:Stay in Chicago and work directly with Blackhawks skills & strength coaches.New story: t.co/TJO15XaMGH

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) April 7, 2026 Mark Lazerus also wrote about Korchinski for today for The Athletic. I strongly encourage you to read this. As I’ve pointed out frequently here when people sometimes forget the human side of the equation, it’s been a long, hard few years for Korchinski in life — nevermind hockey. Really good read here from Mark.

Kevin Korchinski's rookie season shattered his confidence. The loss of his dad shattered his world.I sat down with him to discuss that trying year, and how he's rebuilt his game and his confidence over the last two seasons.? Unlocked and free to read: t.co/OMlSH7SwBr

    — Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) April 9, 2026 Oliver Moore was on the bench and then ice during the Blackhawks’ practice on Wednesday. He looked like he was thrilled to be skating again. But the pause button from Blashill: Moore’s trying to get back right, but regarding a return Blashill said “I think the possibility’s there but I’m not counting on it.”

    — Tab Bamford (@The1Tab) April 8, 2026 Scott Powers reported forward prospect John Mustard plans to return to Providence for his junior season. In the OHL playoffs, Brantford put eight (8) goals on the board in the first game of their second-round series against North Bay. None of those eight came from Marek Vanacker, but he did have three primary assists in an 8-1 blow out.

    — Tab Bamford (@The1Tab) April 9, 2026 Interesting news here from tonight’s visitors at the United Center: Carolina called up three forwards and a defenseman from the nearby Chicago Wolves. Their commute to join the team was an easy one at least! The Canes won’t skate this morning, so we’ll have to see if Rod Brind’Amour shares anything regarding his lineup when he speaks to the media after 5 this evening or if we’re going to have to wait for warm-ups to find out.

The #Canes have recalled forwards Skyler Brind’Amour, Bradly Nadeau and Josiah Slavin as well as defenseman Charles Alexis Legault from the @Chicago_Wolves.Details » t.co/mHQwDLPQNR pic.twitter.com/pVt5wcFRJ8

    — y – Carolina Hurricanes (@Canes) April 8, 2026 It sounds like nobody wants to play nice with the Nashville Predators as they search for a replacement for Barry Trotz. Or the weekend, Elliotte Friedman reported on “Hockey Night in Canada” that the Predators wanted to interview Carolina GM Eric Tulsky but the Hurricanes denied their request. On Wednesday, Rick Dhaliwal of CHEK television reported Nashville requested an interview with Vancouver assistant GM Ryan Johnson (who is also the GM of the Canucks’ AHL affiliate in Abbotsford) but the Canucks denied that request. The Seattle Kraken are joining the growing list of teams looking for new senior leadership. They announced Wednesday that Ron Francis is stepping down from his role.

    — Seattle Kraken (@SeattleKraken) April 8, 2026 The NHL’s all-time goal leader hasn’t made a decision on his future yet. Alex Oveckin told John Walton that he’s going to take some time this summer to sort thru his options. There have been rumors for a couple years that he might finish his career back in Russia. And he was pretty emotional when the Capitals traded John Carlson this season. We’ll see if he moves on from the only NHL team he’s ever played for or comes back to chase 1,000 goals in DC.

Alex Ovechkin sat down with John Walton to discuss his plans to take time after the season to reflect and consult with his family before determining his future this summer.Catch their full conversation tonight on Caps Pregame Live on @MonSportsNet pic.twitter.com/J9jAKL5HJE

    — Washington Capitals (@Capitals) April 8, 2026 The 32 team nominees for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy were announced on Wednesday. There are a number of former Blackhawks included on the list, but one specifically will be receiving a vote from me.
