Blackhawks (Intentionally Experimenting) Lineup Blender Working Again

The Blackhawks practiced at the United Center on Wednesday after taking the official team photo for the 2025-26 season. I will note that the practice we watched was pretty intense from the coaching staff, especially head coach Jeff Blashill. They were working on beating some specific things Carolina (the Blackhawks’ opponent tonight) does well.

The Blackhawks forward lines saw some adjustments in the bottom six again. Here’s what we saw:

Teuvo Teräväinen — Connor Bedard — Nick Lardis Tyler Bertuzzi — Anton Frondell — Ilya Mikheyev Ryan Donato — Frank Nazar — André Burakovsky Andrew Mangiapane — Ryan Greene — Landon Slaggert

I was at least a little surprised to see Sacha Boisvert outside of the rotation, but like Blashill making good on getting Greene back at center down the stretch.

Blashill said he still likes Greene on the wing at at center. But I got the sense from answers from Blashill to questions about Greene and Slaggert both that is some intentional experimenting with those two spending time together on more than the penalty kill late in the season. Here’s what Blashill said, in part, about Greene:

“With Greener, he plays his best when he’s skating. When he gets himself in trouble a little bit when he starts reaching so he has to make sure he’s skating. If he skates to the battle, he wins a lot of battles. If he reaches, he doesn’t win enough battles.”

And here’s part of what he said about Slaggert’s recent stretch of good play:

“When Slaggs is at his best, he’s on the forecheck, disrupting plays, creating turnovers, going to the net and a good penalty killer. Those are kind of the things I think he does best and I think he’s done a pretty good job of that overall lately. It’s just kind of providing that north-south game and energy.”

The way Greene and Slaggert play the entire sheet of ice — when they’re on, moving their feet and attacking pucks — should complement each other well. And I can see that being a fit next season, whether Mangiapane is on their wing or someone else.

Of course, Greene might be that other wing with Boisvert (or Oliver Moore) between them as well.

And I’ll say it again before the predictable “OMG BURAKOVSKY!” comments come: the Blackhawks are treating the rest of the regular season like training camp. Burakovsky is going to get another look in the bottom six to see if things can click. But I certainly wouldn’t consider anything we see over the final four games to be permanent… unless it looks worth running back in September and October.
