While there are plenty of novels out there to choose from when it comes to picking your next read, some stories are just too good to put down once you start them. In fact, there's one novel that came out almost 20 years ago that has officially been declared the "hardest book to put down" by fans on Goodreads.
In a reader-voted list on the popular site called "Hardest Book to Put Down,"Suzanne Collins' first book in her hit dystopian series, The Hunger Games, was crowned the book that was the hardest to stop reading once you started.
As you could maybe guess, the sequel, Catching Fire, came in second place, although the third book, Mockingjay, was a little further down the list in sixth place. Other books that ranked high included Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Fifty Shades of Grey, and Twilight.
The story follows a 16-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen who lives in a dystopian world where children are forced to compete in a to-the-death competition against people from other districts in a televised event. After her younger sister's name is called to participate, Katniss volunteers to take her place, and soon enough, she kickstarts an unexpected revolution with her as the spark.

While the book trilogy was a huge success on its own, its popularity grew tenfold when the movie adaptations started coming out, with the first film released in 2012. Jennifer Lawrence plays Katniss, while other main characters are played by Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, and more.
The sequel film was released in 2013, while the last book was split into two films that came out in 2014 and 2015. A prequel film, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, based on the book of the same name, debuted in theaters in 2023, while another film based on Harrelson's character Haymitch Abernathy's origin story, called The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is set to come out in November 2026.
