What do you do when your brother has been publicly humiliated, socially ostracised, evicted from his home and arrested on charges of alleged misconduct?
Over the Easter weekend, Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, and his wife Sophie visited Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on the Sandringham estate, where he now lives. It’s understood that it was more than a fleeting visit and that they had dinner together — more than enough time to have a serious discussion about the deeply troubling allegations that have swirled around the disgraced former prince for more than a decade.
I think we’ve all been shocked by the way Harry and William, and even Charles and his younger son, can sometimes be within less than a mile of one another and not meet or speak. But we’ve become used to it. And so there was perhaps an expectation that the same would happen with Mountbatten-Windsor and the rest of the family.
Mountbatten-Windsor stands accused of many things, but has not yet been found guilty of any of them and has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Mountbatten-Windsor and the Duke of Edinburgh grew up together; they were almost like a new family for the late Queen, with her two older children already either at or heading for boarding school.
There’s a four-year age gap between the two younger brothers, and they spent much of their childhood together. But just how close they were is up for debate: they are very different characters. Mountbatten-Windsor has always been confident, boisterous, and dominating. Some suggest that he was a bit of a bruiser around his brother. Edward is gentler and more empathetic.
So what was he to do when he and his wife were staying a short stroll away from Andrew’s temporary home, Wood Farm – the very house where the Edinburghs normally stay at Easter? Ignore him? Deliberately avoid him? Or call in to check on his mental and physical welfare?

You could say Edward did the decent thing, though some would argue that Mountbatten-Windsor should be left to stew – but perhaps it’s better described as the “human “thing. It suggests that they are concerned about Mountbatten-Windsor’s state of mind. Some reports say he is still as pompous as ever; others say he is profoundly depressed.
Did they talk about the nitty-gritty of it all? Who knows. Sometimes families just fall back on happy shared memories because it’s easier than facing the difficult issues. Mountbatten-Windsor is still under police investigation for alleged misconduct as a UK trade envoy. If that proceeds to a criminal prosecution, I think even Edward would keep his distance until the case is concluded.
In the end, I suppose it shows us that, while there is no way back for Mountbatten-Windsor and it will probably be a very long time before we see him with other members of the family in public, Edward – and it’s believed Anne – are privately keeping communication channels open. And they undoubtedly keep the King in the picture too.
Mountbatten-Windsor has sullied the name and reputation of the Royal Family. The protests about his conduct and how much any of them knew continue. They steadfastly ignore the banners and shouts and get on with the job in hand.
But I guess Edward’s visit suggests that behind the stoic face of the Royal Family, there lies a beating heart. We can only hope that one of them exerts some pressure on their brother to do the decent thing and tell the US authorities what he knows about Epstein.
