In 1980, country-pop was all the rage, and a soon-to-be superstar got his big break with a hit that sent Pure Prairie League soaring into the Top 10.
Vince Gill joined the band in 1978. The group already had a loyal following in the country-rock scene thanks to the success of their 1975 hit "Aimee." It didn’t take long for his smooth vocals to help push the band further into the mainstream spotlight.
Five years after "Aimee" thrust Pure Prairie League into the spotlight, Gill helped the band crack the Top 10 with "Let Me Love You Tonight." The song had a little help from saxophonist David Sanborn, who provided an unforgettable musical presence throughout the song, according to American Songwriter.
The song also landed at the top spot on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts, per a Facebook post. Today, it is widely considered a Yacht Rock classic.
"Let Me Love You Tonight" came on the heels of Pure Prairie League's signing to Casablanca Records, reported Taste of Country. It was included in the album Firin' Up.
